Later this year I'll be experiencing my first long haul flight, does anyone have an tips on making it as comfortable as possible from experience? Any must haves I need to know of? Thanks in advance!
Trips to the bog once an hour, keeps you moving. Listen to music, I recommend anything by Slayer or Chaos AD by Sepultura.
I went to Australia once to watch the ashes, I thought the bloody plane was never going to land. 3 books 4 films plenty of music
Personal preference aside when I went to Australia I always went for aisle seats easier to get up and move about.
I agree re aisle seats. Forget looking out the window, the novelty soon wears off. I always seemed to get someone in the third seat who fell asleep as soon as the plane took off. It’s more important to be able to get up and walk about. I would stay over and break up the flight if you are going to Aus or NZ. It’s a bloody long way!
Other side to that though is if your asleep you keep getting woken up for somebody wanting the bloody toilet .
Ask the steward/stewardess as you get on if it is a full flight. If it’s not, ask if there are any free rows. Once the flight sets off, go straight to the free seats and lay down/spread out.... you’ll have plenty of room and decent shut eye...
Last long haul we booked seats in front of the middle toilet unit. We could recline the seats without bothering anybody behind. Plus you could easily monitor the toilet situation. Not a long haul but I once came back from turkey with only 16 passengers on the plane at night. Crew asked if we wanted owt give em a shout and then everybody just dossed out.
Don’t drink alcohol before or during Get up and walk around Take plenty of water Take your own entertainment ( personally I like audiobooks) Wear shoes that are comfortable and easily taken off Noise reduction headsets are great Only take on board only what you need, put everything else in the hold
Stretch every couple of hours. Don't drink alcohol or too much caffeine. You might get to see some of America depending on the route it takes. We flew to Florida over New York and had a good view of the city. Also seen Iceland, Northern (Arctic) Canada, the oil fields of Iran/Turkey and a few other countries from the windows of a plane. Although flying over sea can be boring.
Some kind of cushion/travel pillow is a must for me. I prefer a window seat as I can rest it/myself against the wall. Don’t like aisle seat as people constantly ask you to move and you can’t lean to either side. Headphones for any in flight entertainment (although they may give you some for free). Snacks (not peanut in case anyone has allergies). Boiled sweet for take off. A book, paper to doodle on, pen for filling in form you get given when travelling to certain countries, puzzle book, music etc.
Disagree to be fair, I use the sat nav on my phone to follow where we are, identify cities, mountains, rivers, lakes, pubs etc. Obviously that's not much help flying over water, but last year I spent several hours looking at magnificent views of North Atlantic icebergs, Greenland, the vast wastes of northern Canada, the Rockies, on a flight from Manchester to Seattle. Hardly noticed the 11 hour flight.
