Women cost money. Dogs cost money but overall are perhaps cheaper and far more reliable. If you're young enough however, then if you're with the right woman, nothing else matters.
Read paperback books. Listened to vinyl records. Read paperback books. Practiced my limited guitar skills. Read paperback books. Watched telly. Read paperback books. Walked to the library and back. A lot.
I agree 100%. As a kid, if you wanted to go out with your mates, you went and knocked on their door, stood and spoke to their parents, then off out til bed time. Football, cycling, fishing, making dens, climbing trees. Kids don't climb trees any more!!! Social media is a disease which is anything but social. We're a couple of generations away from kids being born with tiny mouths (as speaking becomes a lesser form of communication) and huge thumbs (to operate 'devices'). This, right here, the BBS, is my only form of social media because the common theme, here, is our football team. But now, I'm back off out to enjoy the sun while a generation of porky, pasty white kids sits on their Xbox's and send pictures of cartoon **** and silly smiley faces to each other. I rant like an 80 year old but am actually 42 and hate the way the world is heading. Amen
When I wasn't at work, going out drinking with my friends, or travelling up and down the country watching Barnsley, I tended to walk our dog, read books, listen to music and watch the telly. I think I've always led a dull life!
That would be the early 70's for me.Married and working shifts 6/7 days a week in a steel works. No family till 1975 so spent any non working time pubing and clubing, beer about 15p a pint. Listening to music, early 70's best era for me, heavy blues based rock and driving about aimlessly, petrol about 35p a gallon. WORKED HARD AND PLAYED HARD.
I basically went clubbing for about 6 years. Shagged my **** into submission and spent most days blindo.
Built stuff - or rather took stuff to pieces then tried to put it back together in random order. Electronic stuff that never worked, wooden stuff that fell apart, plastic stiff that never got together in the first place. Watched vhs videos - pulp fiction about 350 times. Dungeons and Dragons. With dice. sex.- without dice and a suprising amount of time with a real live female. Even went outside once in 89. Had a walk on a beach somewhere. fecking cold it was. never again.
This is quite true and depressing... why can’t people just watch and enjoy the show? Many watch through a crappy screen, that they’ll never watch back cos all you can hear is their own out of tune singing.... people don’t experience things anymore...
When I was a lad, we played footy, played kick-can, cricket, watched trains, rode our bikes and occasionally watched a bit of telly. Life wasn't dull by any means.
Dobby - spotlight dobby when clocks went back played footy made rope swings on railway banking laiked on railway lines made dens climbing trees conkering riding bikes playing games on spectrum then amstrad then amiga then mega drive, PCs, play station, xbox making go carts out of pram wheels etc skateboards skateboard ramps and breaking my wrist internet came around when I was at uni alsorts - im happy i lived in the age where i got to see both sides as a young un - before and after internet
pmsl - i missed the early 20s bit after getting my mind cast back to what we did before internet when we were kids. thats what we did when we were nippers i guess in my twenties it was driving round in our cars and modding them CB radio clubbing music playing footy gym college work uni work drinking if i could go back and do it again knowing what i know now it would be a bit different but hindsight is a wonderful thing
I fished a lot in my 20s but that can be quite costly. Walking is a cheap option but it can cost a tidy sum if you want the full Goretex gear if you are taking in high moorland and Mountains. If you want walk and stay local the Trans Pennine Trail has a number of routes close to Barnsley and from it you can get to places like Southport, Hornsea, Manvers Lake, Worsbrough Res, Dearne Valley Park, Wombwell Woods, Elsecar Canal, Elsecar Res, Elsecar Heritage Centre, etc. There are hidden gems like Netherwood Nature Reserve and Plumpton Pond at Wombwell. There are riverside walks on the River Dearne and some shorter walks by the River Dove. There are a hell of a lot of footpaths in the district. Langsett and the Peak District aren't too far away and the Hope Valley with Mam Tor, The Great Ridge, Lose Hill, Win Hill etc are a train ride away. There is a Free Barnsley Cycle Map with miles and miles of routes which includes the Trans Pennine Trail, Bridle Paths, and footpaths. I run up to 40 miles a week mainly on the Trans Pennine and I'm still finding footpaths I never knew existed. If you fancy organised walks you could try this local Independent Walking group who only ask for a £1 donation to cover their admin and running costs costs per walk. http://www.dvwg.org.uk/
