Not heard the release clause issue mentioned anywhere in this, so I’m pretty sure the club just cashed in. I may well turn out to be wrong, but I fully expect Pinnock to be playing in the Premier League in the not too distant future. Let’s hope that the interest we retain in his future career ultimately yields something like his true value(a la John Stones)

Well done on reading something into my post that wasn't there. I've got no problem with Ethan leaving the club but if we keep offering short contracts (3 years) then the revolving door is going to keep revolving.

Don't forget Pinnock was 26, Clarke still only 22.. Pinnock had a better squad around him than Pompey had.. Just have some faith in the club, look at what we achieved last season.

Not well done then for not taking note of the contracts now being offered by the club.. 4 and 5 years being offered.. Current owners had nothing to do with the contract offered 3 years ago. So it is your comment completely out of context.

I’m fairness we are now going for 4 year contracts with an option of a fifth

Give our policy through, a 4 year contract is only a 3 year contract, unless they’re ***** and then we are stuck with them for the full 4 years

Not really when our owners are making sure that they do not put the clubs future in doubt by doing so. Not sure what some people expect the new owners to do on this transfer?

To be fair my initial post was just speculation regarding a release clause - as the first we've heard about accepting a bid is today, which would suggest it's an initial bid.

If this initial bid met a release clause then there's no much the owners can do. However if there was no release clause and we've accepted 3 million, then it's very disappointing.

The truth will out I suppose, cos if Brentford have gotten away with a good deal then we'll hear about it from their end.

I have no idea about their finances but in this day and age I don't want us to spend beyond our means like many clubs are doing, dicing with their futures.

Disappointing that we couldn’t get a higher fee for him, but if he’s adamant he doesn’t want to sign a new contract then better to sell now and have time to replace him than hold out till the end of the window.

No back at ya Mr Argumentative. Just quoting facts.. players recently signed have had long term deals. Nothing even official just rumours about Halme signing so how can people jump to a 3yr year deal conclusion?

It's the club's policy and mantra in operation again and I have no doubt that the board will have done all they can to retain him, but we have made some cash and will reinvest, so, hey-ho! my only gripe with this is not a criticism of the board for its clearly-stated policy. It is rather that Ethan could do so much better than Brentford. I would have thought he was premiership and that thought has grown throughout the season. I am not belittling Brentford either in saying this. He would have been better at Norwich, Villa, or a club like Everton. Better than Stones and Mawson for me. Let's hope we have retained the usual interest in his on-going career. He could be worth a mint in a couple of years. Best wishes, Ethan, but best wish of all was that you had stayed for one more season as captain.

I'd be amazed if a championship club put a release clause into a contract of a player who had only just got promoted from the conference.

Its how we replace them with players that are happy to be paid the wages we will offer - league 2 players in league 1 you can get away with as there's plenty of poor teams in that division, However, league 2 and even league 1 players to some extent in the championship? - its going to be a struggle.

I guess that's why we've widened the net to Europe, to hopefully pick up better players that expect less money - but its a gamble, and its a bigger gamble to change more than half the defence in one go with new players.

If reported fees are to be believed we've got around £5.5 million from losing 3 of our back 5 - Davies (free) Lindsay (£2.5m) and Pinnock (£3m) - we've spent around 800k replacing them so far (2 keepers for free i think? and the Danish lad) - so even with another centre half added for say another £1 million I just cant get my head round how we'll have the same quality for that much less - and they've got to bed in very quickly - in a league higher than the players we've sold were in.

    I guess we'll see.

Yes but on the other hand he obviously wanted to leave or he would have signed another contract. Regardless of any clause, it looks like clubs were not falling over themselves to sign him otherwise we would have seen higher bids.. you get what you can take when you run a tight but progressive ship.

Like Barnlseyshaun said, it is down to how we replace the players. We should still have a decent amount in the kitty now for those replacements. Spend it wisely and move on.
