Shouldn't have to but sadly the alternative is hiding who they really are. If you didn't hide it someone else would "out" them probably in a unpleasant way.
I agree with your point though, it really shouldn't matter anymore.

Do you really think that's the case in 2019? if he was in my changing room he's just another team mate, end of really. Why the need to hide something that's just normal is beyond me.

Try telling that to the two girls beaten up on the train for being gay . Or a friend of mine who was not allowed to be with a class of kids on his own because he was gay ....

 

My girlfriend's daughter is bisexual. She's always banging on about gay pride this and what that gay author said etc. I get a bit irritated because I don't see why it needs to be such a big issue. I don't give a flying fig about her sexuality and neither does anyone I know.
Then I imagine the reaction a gay footballer would get week in week out from opposing fans and I think that maybe she's got a point. Their battle is not yet won.

 

I think the majority agree with your point that it shouldn't be an issue but sadly it still is. Hence why there are no openly gay footballers in England. Footballers have a right to keep their sexual preferences private, but they shouldn't feel forced to due to fear of discrimination.

 

There isn't a single openly gay footballer in England. I do not believe for a second that there are no gay footballers. It must be horrendous trying to hide it for reasons such as those given in my post. If they didn't believe it to be necessary, they wouldn't all hide it. I guess they know something you don't.

 

Everyone has the right to keep their sexuality private if they wish not just footballers . But it shouldn't even be an issue in this day and age. Who gives a **** who's shaggin who? it doesn't impact on my life whatsoever and it shouldn't impact on others.

 

100% that is still the case. Just because it's no issue to you doesn't mean everyone else is without prejudice.

 

You're missing the point. No one should be bothered. However people are. Hence why so many people have to hide their sexuality. Which is terrible. And it appears that this is even bigger of an issue in football than in general society. A player coming out in English football is a big issue because hardly any have done before. Maybe two I can think of. One killed himself and the other did so after playing in England. Players openly being gay is a big step and one that should be encouraged.

 

Of course it's an issue. Anyone see Top Gear tonight? Sultan of Brunai has just declared the death penalty for homosexuality and adultery (probably just for women?) As in many other Middle East states.

I do give a toss & am interested to see how he gets on & how far we've progressed, or think we have.

 

Legal....with that lot it's a wonder they didn't make it compulsary !

You've contradicted yourself. I'm not sure people are that bothered really. I heard Jamie O Hara interviewed recently talking about being in dressing rooms with numerous team mates that were gay. It wasn't even an issue he said and it shouldn't be. It's just a none story.

 

If it was a non story those footballers would have come out surely

 

And I wouldn't hear homophobic language every time I go to football match. We have come a long way but still have a long way to go.

 

A lot of gay people think it's still an issue when in fact to 99% of the populace it really isn't. One of my relatives came out last year and he was scared to death that family and friends would disown him. Not one person did and we were all very supportive. It was no great surprise anyway but he was amazed by the support.

 

The next world cup is in Qatar, a country where homosexuality is illegal (facing up to 7 year imprisonment). Any international player that comes out is effectively ruling themselves out of the next world cup.
