Will be taking my parents out on Sunday, belated fathers day treat. Would appreciate any recommendations from you knowledgeable people for venues near Netherton (Wakefield). Thanks in anticipation.

My wife and myself have used the Sovereign at Shelley a lot . It's a steady run from Netherton ( circa 20 minutes),
but well worth it. As you reach the junction for Holmfirth, you've got a petrol station to your right and the road into Ingbirchworth is to your left.

Leave the Junction and turn sharp right and the pub is to your left adjacent to the road that eventually leads down into the village just before Holmfirth . It's very popular, so if you decide to give it a try, I would advise that you book.Very reasonably priced and my favourite Peroni on draught. A similar pub in the same group, is the Red Kite which is left off the roundabout leading into Wakefield as you leave Junction 39 of the M1.

Not too posh, with 2 hours travelling each way, comfortable will do nicely, not a dress up job.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have left the decision with the family and they have chosen the star Inn, Kirkham gate. Booked in for 2. 30 sunday. Looking forward to it, especially as ar lass says she'll drive home, beer o'clock!

Used to visit there with firm Reps when I worked on the 41 Industrial Park. At that
time, it was owned by the birth mother of Corrie actor Philip Middlemiss. Don't know
who has it now. Always decent pint and food, back in the day.

    .
Quick update to say that a wonderful lunch was enjoyed by all of us. Thanks again for the suggestions. Can highly recommend the star Inn. Food excellent, beer lovely, surprisingly the black sheep was better than the bradfield blonde. Service was more akin to a posh restaurant rather than a pub. Good atmosphere and very attractive staff(according to my son, although I did have a little peek while ar lass weren't looking). Will definitely visit again.

Glad you enjoyed it mate, we walked up there for a meal last night and the place was empty at 9 o clock.
Cracking food as usual but just a really sad atmosphere, unfortunately not for the first time.
I said to our lass I can't see how they keep going if it's so quiet especially on a Saturday night.
It's a real shame because the quality of the food and beer is spot on.
