Too easy that Terry. Society is getting worse at both ends. It's less caring but then we allow people like this not to take responsibility for their actions. You wouldn't feel sorry for them if they tried to mug you or hassled yor wife would you? They chose to alienate themselves and see kindness as a weakness. I've no idea how you bring those people back into society.
Yes, they should round these things up. Maybe put them with other things like themselves. Though the prison systems pretty full so I suggest something more efficient- maybe camps? I wonder if there are any other people you don't like we can weed off into them? To pay for it we can just cut community programs and education a little further as I can't really see a link in all this. Boris will sort it out for us.
I travel into town at least once sometimes twice a week. (Wife and grandkids pre school in tow) Have done for the last few years. Apart from the odd beggar( Usually the same 2/3) have only once encountered an unsavoury incident. Swearing occasionally. But go in any town centre and you'll come across these types of incidents. I for one am looking forward to the development of the town centre. The new market is far better than the old one. Undercover, meat and fish more accessible. For those who criticise re-redevelopement.. For God's sake give it a chance. People will moan but the same people moan if we stand still and choose to go elsewhere. Why . Because elsewhere is moving with the times. Gior bairning and support your OWN TOWN
I like the re-development. Looking forward to a new more vibrant and cosmopolitan town-centre once it's completed. Love my town.
A far, far better education system to give everyone opportunities in life. Far, far better mental health support provision. Far, far better funding for deprived areas. All are needed though there will still be a fair few who would rather just sponge and do as little as possible at the expense of everybody else. Nevertheless let's tackle the first three first and deal with whatever layabouts are left over afterwards. The problem is...nobody wants to pay for it do they?
The only solution is to get people to give a **** about themselves, their neighbours and their surroundings. How you do that I have no idea. The extreme way would be to do what China does and send people to "re-education camps" or remove kids from those sorts of homes early on, but that's a bit nazi-ish and in no way do I support that. How you get uneducated people to care about educating themselves is next to impossible, I guess in time it will naturally sort itself out (Decades? Centuries?), but in the meantime we all just have to put up with it, unless there is total sea change in the way people want to live.
Perhaps it would never have developed into this sorry state if T.May had not got rid of 21000 police officers and then transferred 2000 of those remaining to counter terrorism.
I think the problem is there aren't the same jobs that there were before. I think peoples pride has suffered as a consequence. That includes people in work. I'd much rather be a fitter than what I do now. However, I dropped out during my HNC to go to the pub in the afternoons whilst on day release. I wasn't sacked but my funding was stopped by the company and I was downgraded to a technician (engineers mate). People make mistakes like I did. I was fortunate enough to put my notice in and get another job after that. However, I often look back with regret and wonder whether I'd be an Engineer now on £30k a year with a bit more pride. Instead of dead end job to dead end job with spells on the dole in between. There are systems in place for these people I was on the dole for 13 months the first time and I'll be honest I didn't want to work. It was something I had to snap out of myself.
Personally think it was much worse 20-25 years ago when heroin was the drug of choice. There were lots more police then too. Used to live off sheffield road back then and it wasn't pleasant.
There wasn't any jobs when i left school in the strike or for a couple of years after. We didn't have the same problems as we do now though. I ended up moving away to work when i was 16. There are loads of employment opportunities now in comparison.
I work in the town centre and it is a disgrace- there needs to be a copper on peel square 24/7 - rebuild looks fantastic but until the lowlife are not allowed to congregate and cause trouble right in the town centre, things will not improve
Have to disagree with this. The UK is one of the few western countries which has a integrated social care system and has had this since 1948. The support is Universal and not based on means ,as it was previously. Our Welfare benefits systems creates a safety net to prevent hardship. Unfortunately, we have seen in the last 25 years, this has become a lifestyle choice, where because of low wages it is more prudent to exploit the benefits of welfare. All governments have sought to diminish this but have failed through not taking a strong approach. So we have left with the conundrum of a populace who could work but don't because of fiscal punishment. Employers need staff but can't recruit due to average earnings not being higher than benefits. All countries have this problem and do the same as UK, import people to do unskilled average jobs. There is NO sanction for UK citizens who live in social housing, have children, don't reskill, retrain, and receive a net income larger than my own and most average earners. Has for the tiny number of people in the Town centre who act irresponsibly,to blame the system for their actions is wrong. It can be argued that the system creates them,as it provides a supportive unchallenging environment, where they are free to live such lives without sanction, unless they break the law. How can you change or improve your life, if you don't engage in life, act irresponsibly ,spend all day sat outside a shop begging.? Nothing is going to change unless unless you engage with the statutory services. As someone who worked in the NHS, our experience was they wouldn't as there was always a selfish alternative. Last year during Party Conference season, there was a news report of a firm in Northampton needing 600 staff but was having difficulty recruiting. He felt he would have to recruit abroad. At the Labour conference, a young unemployed man from Newcastle complained about lack of jobs. Again, why did he not move to Northampton? Because there is no sanction and it fits the narrative that it's always someone else's fault . Believe it or not, the Romanian staff at Oakwell Car wash, will be earning more doing a low paid, low skilled job in Barnsley, than they could back home. Yet a unskilled ,unqualified, unemployed person in the UK, wouldn't dream of earning an income doing that job,but will receive a income from the state. This is major issue for the UK in the 21st Century but not one anyone is willing to discuss honestly.
Programmes like Benefits Street don't help either. They sought of glorify not going out to work. If you're easily led and looking for an out they offer hope.
As a near town centre resident I commented at the weekend how the majority of them had disappeared, l thought it was down to the dispersing order or whatever they had brought in recently. Believe me its better than it was 12 months ago. I work in Sheffield, a large city l know for comparison but given a choice I'd rather have a few scatterings of homeless and beggars than the full blown camp site l have to walk past every morning. The redevelopment is just what it needs, folk need to start using it now instead of feeding Sheffield all the time.
