Just a mistake, the result is on the BBC:- "Match tied, Super Over tied (England win World Cup final on boundaries scored)"
Have not watched cricket for years it just does not bother me.But the wife loves it,so she had it on all day. I just kept coming in when I wasn’t doing anything through the day but by the time England we’re halfway through their innings I couldn’t take my eyes of it.Bloody hell what a great game.I know we won ,but I bet they are still ticked of about that throw back to the wicket then got deflected for a four of Stokes. What a match.
PS If England had hit six sixes off their super over would they have bothered having New Zealand bat knowing that even if they matched that amazing feat they would have still lost because of something that happened hours earlier that even the most observant fan wouldn't have known without consulting the score card. I suppose they could have hoped for a wide or no ball.
You're talking about an entire season in both of your examples. This was a one off game. Neither team won it.
If they would have used tournament run rate as a deciding factor, England would have won, if they used final position in table, England would have won, if they took into account who won in the group game between the two, England would have won. NZ needed 16 runs, they fell short but were bloody good, best game of cricket ever.
The point I'm making is why, when you have both teams on the field in front of a huge crowd and a massive television audience, you'd devise a system that took anything else into account at all rather than find a winner on the day. I can gaurantee you one thing, there'd be far fewer people so accepting of such a rule had New Zealand hit more boundaries in the game.
My away goals analogy is that it's a fairly arbitrary determininator, but it's something you can influence and be aware of in advance. Obviously football and cricket are different sports so direct comparisons are challenging. Having super overs with different pairs until there's a winner could be fun (as you might have alluded to earlier). Super overs are so rare and ties in super overs rarer still. They may tweek for future competitions, who knows.
I'm with Jay on this. It's a crap rule and I'm sure if draws were more common then a better rule would have been in place. It's the kind of thing where they will have had a meeting to discuss what the rules should be, someone will have said "it'll never happen, let's just say most boundaries". No-one will have even imagined it would decide a world cup final and I'm sure that if you'd told them that one day it would then they would have chosen a different rule.
Its the rules, whether we agree with them or not. Course i would have felt dissapointed had we not won but both teams knew the rules before the game and certainly before the extra over. Its just typical though, we finally win something major but instead of folk enjoying it we seem to want to find ways of belittling and decrying our acheivements. Weve missed out so much in sport due to bad luck and dodgy decisions, its seems to be engrained in us now not to accept brilliant victory.
Also as someone who only follows cricket casually wouldn't the fact that NZ lost fewer wickets in their innings be a more sensible decider than boundaries?
Used to always be the case, but led to teams dead batting the final couple of balls rather than trying to score winning runs.
In Olympic boxing, if it's a draw at the end of a bout and count back is equal (I.e punches counted by some but not all of the 5(?) ringside judges), they have 1 extra round. If they're still even after that then the judges vote for a winner.
i think rock paper scissors would be best but seriously how many super overs occur in international 1day cricket? i've just googled it and this was the 1st, and how many before stokes hit that "six" at the death knew the rule? how many know what was next if total 6's & 4's were equal, i'd be only guessing it'd be who finished higher in group or head to head in group stage people may say it was a tied game but we are still holding the world cup the best winner yesterday was cricket itself
