Not usually one to post OT threads but recently had a bid accepted on a property and finally seem to be getting on the housing ladder. However me and my missus are first time buyers and have next to nothing to move in with and wondered if anyone had any suggestions on where we could get cheap bits from to start us off.
We got a few things off gumtree and 'items for sale' on Facebook. Might be worth posting on here what you need and see if anyone has anything for you.
Facebook is a solid shout, always forget they have that marketplace. will need the basic stuff like Sofas, bed frames, coffee tables, drawers etc. Only things we have currently are a TV, Bed and chest of drawers. Plus luckily current owners are leaving their fridge freezer for us.
I think there is a big charity shop next to the job centre in town usually has some decent furniture in.I think it’s still there.
I have a washing machine (hotpoint aquarius) and a taller larder style fridge, free to collect in Worsbrough if you want them? Edit just seen you have a FF, pine coffee table? I'm moving out of town (fed up of all the extreme lefties )
We were in a similar position to you. We had all utensils, small kitchen appliances etc. but zero furniture as we rented furnished. We got quite a bit of Freecycle which we will slowly replace and some off Facebook marketplace (everything we got off there were all inferior to the Freecycle stuff though even though we had to pay). We also got a couple of things from Ikea, just to start us off. Barnsley Freecycle link: https://groups.freecycle.org/group/BarnsleyUK/posts/all as the name suggests, no money is allowed to change hands.
Go in there you can get close and test anything that you fancy very very reasonable prices cos everything they take goes towards running the hospice not paying multi thousand pound salaries to executives
Will check it out thanks, my parents have offered to help to get us some little things like microwave, toaster etc. but need to sort main parts ourselves. I think we will do an IKEA trip once it is all finalised but some stuff is so expensive doubt we could afford to kit whole house out.
Not sure what will be left yet until keys swap hands so will wait it out in terms of washers and dryers etc. Mainly other stuff we need at moment.
I've just had a look myself at the Barnsley Freecycle, it doesn't seem to get many posts unless they get snapped up quickly (I live in Leeds so that one has more people contributing due to the larger population). You could always look at the surrounding area ones too depending on which side of Barnsley you live. As it's all free though, it's not really a risk as it can put you on until you can afford to replace. As a child, I used to always look in the classifieds in the Chronicle and work out how much it would cost to furnish a whole house just from the adverts (I'm sad I know). I'm not sure if they are still going or not, and obviously you don't get pictures there, but it could be another option.
Cheers some good ideas. I am moving out of Barnsley to Langold area as that is where the missus is from and she owns Horses so gotta be down that area so could always try looking for freecycle pages for Worksop or Donny
Try the Heart Foundation shop opposite Quality Save.I've never bought from there but donated plenty over the years.Everything you need will be sold in there.Sofas and suites are professionally cleaned before being sold. They also sell quite a lot of brand new stuff at very good prices.
Thank you, not sure doors need replacing as current owners recently renovated before selling so main works done for us luckily just need to fill it.
British heart foundation, can get some decent stuff in there. Even a lot of stuff brand new at decent prices
Edit: Snap British Heart Foundation. I went into the one in Pontefract a few weeks ago and they had some nice stuff.
As already mentioned mate......barnsley hospice, went in with daughter in law and her partner when they were looking for a suite for the living room in their first house together ......they picked up a smashing two and three seat leather suite £125 and there were plenty of other bargains in there. Barnardo's up monk bretton sometimes has decent furniture.......sithi.
