We live in a 1 bedroom house in Surrey and are looking at quotes for fascia board sanding and painting of our house as well as the area above the porch painting. It's in decent condition but the first quote we got they wanted £1800 which seemed high even in this area ! Anyone any idea roughly how much it should be please

Hi. Depending on the Meterage and access equipment needed you’ll struggle to get a quote from someone without looking at it but £1800 sounds high.
I usually charge around 6-£800 to replace Fascia boards n guttering on a standard terrace property.

Hi Eggham. I'm a self employed decorator and that sounds very heavy.

Did you get a written quote/estimate? If so, what did they specify in terms of the work to be carried out and materials?

I would never quote a job blind, but that sounds to me like 2 days for 1 decorator, plus materials and sundries.

Even at 3 days @ say, £200 per day, it's only £600 in labour.

Depends on access equipment really. Somebody doing it on ladders will always be cheaper than scaffold. A tower scaffold isn’t always an option either.

You could be looking at £500-600 for the scaffold, plus the decorator’s mark up on it.

I’d also say If scaffold is being used, think about other jobs that can be done whilst it is up - but always gain permission off the person supplying before climbing and using it.

Just using ladders, sanding down then undercoat plus 2 top coats. 2 of them working for 3-4 days they said. Already told them we think that's too expensive so they're not coming

Not a 2 man job - unless one is an apprentice which would entail a cheaper rate. £300 for a man and an apprentice for 3 days is still £900.

You’ve done right to say no.

What ever you get quoted from uo here it's always double that down south...
My brother experiences it all the time
    When having work done...
I always suggest to him to ask one of the guys up here for a quote for the job then offer to pay for digs fuel and stick couple of 100 on quote to make it worth while there's always some one who will take the job and you would still be saving compared to pricing in the south

It's a shame you didn't mention this earlier. We had a couple of quiet weeks where we had a few spare days here and there.

I could have come down and done the work for you and stayed at my mates at Walton.

I know a facility manager for the NHS who moved from Scotland to down south, he pays for his Scottish trades to travel down and do the work as it works out cheaper than using local trades.
