Vidiprinter - ah the young uns when I first took an interest it was the teleprinter - basically a typewriter with a golf ball head printing onto a sheet of paper with a camera focused on it I think I was still just as interested but the rate of transfers was much slower in those days - we signed one or 2 over the summer and then the occasional one through the season. Still got just as upset when we sold Barraclough and Otulakowski to Newcastle and West Ham though
I miss the thrill of listening to the radio when you leave a ground, or even if you've not been at a game and get in the car after going somewhere, and getting the football scores through, having had no idea of the way games are going as there was no mobiles etc back then. I can remember being in a small shopping centre in Perry Barr at 4:45pm on a saturday and about 60-80 people being stood outside an electrical retailers window watching the TV's inside as they were showing Grandstand( remember that!) and the vidiprinter as the final scores were going through.
In the days when we had the 3:15 kick offs you couldnt get back to the car in time for the first reading of the results (read by James Alexander Gordon) but once we mover to 3:00 I remember hearing the sports report music as we legged it down Pontefract Road towards Woods Glassworks where we used to park sometimes we just made it others we were tring to catch the scores from the cars queueing down the road. - Ah I miss the '70's
Or coming out and looking for somebody with a transistor radio that was turned up and going in your direction
True. I'd have been about 21 so still very much into nights out. I can't remember much about the shift but I dare say my productivity wouldn't have been great.
I find this count down.to a transfer window closing very Sky driven and unnecessary. Ooh.look its Jim White being overly loud and every premier league club's manager's friend.
The high point yesterday was the level of excitement from the reporter at Old Trafford reporting the 'exclusive breaking news' that Marcos Rojo wasn't going on loan to Everton after all. Even the Instagram warriors couldn't give a toss. Sometimes, less is more. Bring back Ceefax page 390 and scanning the back page of The Star every evening hoping to read all the Barnsley news before I was told to clear off by the newsagent
