I commonly cite the Oxford grad with honours I worked with for a day earlier in my career who thought paper physically travelled down a fax line.

Scoff if you say 'those with lower educational values have more right wing views' the danger is that you suggest that those who actually have right wings are not as clever as those with other views.

DWLC - you are right - in my family those without degrees seem to be managing very well both financially, socially and in the work place - as well as if not better than those with degrees.

On that note I give you..... drum roll......

    Angela Rayner Shadow education secretary!!!!!

Also I left with A levels and through choice did not apply to Uni , as did a number of my year (much to the disgust of the careers adviser who washed his hands of anyone not applying to university) . This was in the early 70s where decent jobs were plentiful ( I applied for 5 jobs, got 4 interviews and had offers for 3 ). Interestingly 3 years on I was working in Insurance at a large Corporate and was asked to mentor a new starter who, it turned out was from my school in the same year and had obtained a degree in an unrelated to the job subject then had a year out. He complained to his line manager that I should not be his senior or mentoring him as he had a degree and I did not.

It was pointed out, in no uncertain terms, that I had 4 years commercial (banking and insurance) experience and training (studying for an ACII Quali on the job) and he had none and no employment history. He left after a few months!

My daughter when she left Tertiary college was offered three University places after doing a vocational B Tec where she obtained a distinction in all modules. She deferred the offers and took a year out before deciding where to go but in the meantime took a low paid job relevant to her BTEC(up against graduates at interview but demonstrated practical skills) but with great prospects for advancement in an interesting field . She is now Project managing in the same company, has many contacts (Internet gaming industry) and is well respected and is well paid. She also recruits, trains and manages staff many of whom have degrees.

In today's competitive market, as you say, degrees are more or less compulsory to get into a good career although there are exceptions as per above. However if you go back a few decades that was not the case.

I strongly disgree some modern degrees, the value which of which are highly questionable, automatically equate to the level of intelligence of the graduate. We can all cite examples of people with degrees and absolutely no common sense. There are many older people out there who may not have degrees but have an equal or superior intellect to many graduates

My favourite outcomes from this week...
The UK government has no intention of putting up a physical border between NI and Ireland. (Boris Johnson)
The UK government will end free movement of EU citizens on day 1 of leaving the EU. Priti Patel

This is Bull **** of Trumpian proportions. How can both of those things be true? Who is there left that actually believes anything these morons say?

2 comments to this -as Brexit is less depressing than the cricket at the moment.

The only way to avoid a hard border in Ireland is to have a deal (or unite Ireland inside the EU) - if the UK chooses to leave the EU with no deal then a border is required under WTO rules. The UK can try and ignore the international laws if it likes but the EU certainly cant and wont - so beware of Tory Spin that its the EU thats put the border there it wont be - it will be solely a result of a UK decision.

What happened to all the promises that EU citizens had nothing to worry about - if I understand the horrible lying home secratary correctly all the EU nationals in the UK will suddenly be here illegally - especially if they pop back to their birth country and then try to return. Its such an unbelievably bad policy its beyond parody. Patel makes Alan B'stard who was a deliberately unbelievably extreme fictional caricature look quite moderate and rational.

Sorry but that's incorrect....The WTO does not insist on hard borders anywhere.

The WTO insists on tariffs being collected not sure how that works without a border and customs clearance. Arguably it can be a soft border but there isn’t currently a workable solution. Still Boris has 28 days left to think of one
