If your rent is 500 quid
Your heating/ water etc is 100 quid
Your transport to work is 60 quid.
Your council tax is 100 quid
You need a monthly prescription 10
    Other bills are 50 quid

From your 1000 quid you have 180 left for the month. I’d say that’s as near to severe as you want to get. And that relies on.you never getting sick as you receive ssp. And as you have no savings never having any unforeseen emergencies.

    I’d say that’s severe enough.

The above example is a real one in terms of outgoings for my brother renting a fairly none descript house in Darfield.

He earns note than the 1000 quoted. More like 1300 but he is permanent skint despite working himself to death

He has a pre pay meter so options are limited due to a poor credit rating. . Water is part of the 100 quid. He is paying some arrears off from when he was off with a perforated lung last year.

    Surely you're not saying
    We have the resources
To save the poor from their lot
    There will be poor always
    Pathetically struggling
Look at the good things you've got
Think while you still have me
Move while you still see me
    You'll be lost
You'll be so so sorry when I'm gone

    Jesus Christ Superstar - Lyrics

Those lyrics above really disturbed me, when I was a kid. Placed in the mouth of Jesus. In a musical.

How much does it cost for a chip pan and a sack of potatoes ???
Then add a dozen eggs and a few few fresh like cabbages, swedes etc.
And that’s that for the week.
That’s how kids were brought up where I lived.
And those kids were all happy and healthy.

Compare that to how parents shop today.

It's what Tim Rice said, in the mouth of JCS.

Who had the prepayment meter fitted? your brother or the previous tenant. If it’s previous tenant I’d be making sure your brother isn’t getting stiffed for the fees.

If it was your brother, I’d still be checking everything cos they’ll be trying to screw him over.

He should, if under £500 of debt gas and same on lecky be able to switch under the debt assignment protocol to a new supplier.

Debt doesn’t go away but if he’s on a lower unit rate his bill will reduce.

Still 70-80 a month even with debt is high. . .

I must admit the whole musical from start to finish had a massive effect on me.

Our middle school with kids aged 13 put on a production of it.

We went in on Sundays for weeks to rehearse. It took over our lives, and our tiny minds at the time.

    I played Judas, obviously.

But the departure in the text of JCS from the Methodist Church my mother had me go to, was profound.

Made me think. I didn't do much thinking back then. Till then.

I got into it because Ian Gillan of Deep Purple was the original JC in the musical and I was/ am a big Deep Purple fan . Went to Leeds Arena to see the Stage version with Mel C and Tim Minchin and Chris Moyles , it was brilliant , but no one in severe poverty was there , the tickets were a fortune

I help him with his finances. The prepay meter was put in for him and yeah they are trying go **** him over. He is behind on water, and has debt for dual fuel before they put the meter in. He has reduced payments but we can’t get em lower. He should be debt free soon. But shows how precarious the life of someone who has worked since they left school can be if they are on a low wage and heave 3 months off work sick having not had a day off sick in years. He’s lucky cow be had family to help him. Some people don’t.

Ah, yes, poor people tax. If you have enough money, you can get cheaper rates, you can buy in bulk, etc. But if you're poor and don't have a high rating, everything is more expensive, which just keeps you in poverty. It's a sham and more people should be upset about the whole way it works!

As long as I've money left over form my 20p win Lucky 15's and £2 football acca's and crates of Strongbow on a weekend I'm happy. I lead a relatively simple life. I tip up the bill money to our lass and the rest is my own.
