Very underrated manager - not the best football, we've ever played, but he operated on a shoestring budget and got us competing at a very difficult time for the club. Without his signings we wouldn't have had the Wilson year.
Fetches back memories in standing stands loads better apmospire, we had a great team full of heart, Owen archdeacon was a class act very underrated
Brings back memories. It would be interesting to see how modern players cope with trying to dribble through quagmires while simultaneously hurdling knee high tackles.
Wonderful stuff, thank you. Great to see the old ground again with the advertising sign boards for businesses that aren't around any more. The main gripe I have is that we had too many strikers in them days. Always best to play with only one, like today. Makes you appreciate any goals we may score !
Evoked happy memories. I was at that game. Great to see two of my all time favourites again re- Futch and Gary Fleming.
Brilliant video, brings back a lot of good memories. As a counterpoint, I've just seen this posted on Twitter!
I got to see behind the scenes at Bramall Lane that day with a mate who knew a Barnsley Director. We met their players as well as our lads. I remember Blades Manager Dave Bassett having a word and telling us we had no chance of beating them that day. How wrong he was. I was a bit apprehensive when he came to manage us, but I have to say, I really enjoyed that solitary season. We played without fear and had the capability to score more than the opposition. We were also very unlucky not to win the play off final against Ipswich. I believe there was talk of Bassett being asked to take on a role of something akin to a Director of Football, but after that final without any explanation he left the Club. I would love to know what happened with that one.
Mad Mel, mad as a box of bats, but I have a lot of affection for him and the players who served him. He started it, that journey to the Premier League, him and Dennis and Winstanley. Amazing times. And I was young and cared about stuff and supporting my town was a badge of honour. Still is to a certain extent but very difficult to do with the current regime and the one prior when people are in deference of money however much that is exaggerated and, referring to the prior regime, how ill gotten that wealth was.
Some good times with Mel but also I remember 3000 at Oakwell for a Championship game and a turgid 0-0 at Charlton where the players were boo'ed off .
You referred to the previous regime and his ill gotten wealth. I don’t think that’s acceptable but then you have form for these sorts of outbursts.
Thanks very much for putting all this stuff up. For those of us of a certain age and increasingly fuzzy memories it's great to see.
That's nothing to do with it. What you have contributed is slanderous. Mine isn't. Firstly because I know the law and secondly because what I wrote was correct. Don't address me like that again.
