Remember him lining up with the likes of Ironside, Barry Murphy, Winnie and Howard obviously, Hamstead, Evans and Dean. A great side that got promoted in the year I first watched (1967-68) and was responsible for me first getting the bug!

    RIP Betts

    Sad to hear he’s gone.

Our key midfield player from that era. John made our midfield tick. When he played well so did the rest of the team. He was a delight to watch. RiP John and commiserations to his family.

Jimmy Hume on the back row and Brian Taylor on the front. Hume was one of the stars of the Chester team that had a forward five of top goal scorers but he didn’t do much for us. Taylor was an average winger/midfielder

Just 12 players in that picture, probably the whole first team squad! In those days you'd have the same eleven starting every week,no subs allowed until the 70s,and even then only one. These days you have squads of up to 30 players,3 subs per game, young people today they don't know they're born

Was in the side that I started watching in 1968.

He was a great player at the level we were at in 66. He was one of my favorite players from that era. I have a long standing memory of him scoring from an extremely tight angle at the Ponte End. He must have been no more than a foot from the goal line and 10-15 yards from goal on the West Stand side. RIP John and thank you for the memories.

Thank you. I thought Brian Taylor may be one of them. I can't recall Jimmy Hume at all.

I beg his pardon- I dropped the S off the end. It’s Jimmy Humes. Only played a handful of games for us. Chester had the best of his career.

RIP John , a very classy player. Him and Barrie Thomas transformed us at that time. A very "balanced" runner with the ball, played in an era of ploughed fields for pitches and much heavier balls.so running and dribbling with the ball was by no means easy. He made it look so.

I too had the pleasure of watching John play many times. A classy footballer who would have been well suited to the modern game.
    RIP John

Yes you're right. According to Wikipedia he only played 7 for us scoring once. However, it records his only honour as Promotion from Division 4 with Barnsley. I know we were runners up to Luton that season but I can't imagine anyone being awarded a medal for only 7 apprearances.

Don’t know what the rules were regarding getting a medal, or whether or not he actually got one. I just remember that he arrived at Oakwell with a decent scoring record for a winger but we were obviously not the right club for him.

No I di not know the rules if there are any. I suspect that as Humes was on our books when we won promotion and he had 7 first team appearances Wikipedia have made the leap to say that he won promotion with us. I doubt he would have been awarded a medal by the FL. I am pretty sure that a club can request and pay for additional medals if they thought a player was dserving of one. I would doubt that the club would have done that given the low number of games played. I do not have my record books with me so I do not know who cotributed to that promotion but I would not think that that many players were involved that season.
