According to an opinion poll at the weekend the Tories have 40% of voters claiming they will vote for them
Their leader is a serial liar
He has failed on the main promise he made to die in a ditch or get Brexit by 31 Oct
He renaged on his promise not to put a border in the Irish sea
He has taken workers rights and environmental protections out of the withdrawal agreement
His is the party that introduced Austerity and Universal credit
He has continually tried to bypass parliament - and his Withdrawal bill gives sweeping powers to the ministers outside parliamentary scrutiny
The party responsible for the hostile environment leading to Windrush and almost certainly repeated with EU nationals who have lived here for decades

and yet the Tory party seems to be heading for a landslide victory if they get their election

Can someone explain how this works because I am totally baffled and depressed

I think we know the reasons why. However much some say they aren't true.

All of which bombard you with reports of the incompetence of Jeremy Corbyn which is then lapped up by people who have little or no capacity for rational thought. They have managed to persuade a large proportion of the population that working class people have more in common with an Eton elite than they have with the Labour party.

Because at least 40% of the country (it's more than this tbf) are either stupid, selfish or both.

    Next question.

    Exactly this .
Anyone in opposition is earmarked with propaganda even Ed Milliband was dubbed Red Ed and people fell for it hook Line and sinker .
Some will say they aren’t influenced and can make their own minds up etc etc but you only have to listen to some of them over Brexit to know they are.
These Tabloids even made Mosley look the Darling untill the invasion of Poland .
    Most people are sheep .

I was just reading through some of the responses on We are Barnsley's Facebook post on the subject. Very depressing to read, working class Barnsley folk saying they want to "vote for Boris" in a election.

Its clear that the media and the new age of digital marketing is making some people believe in things that the Torys want, despite real evidence to the contrary. Unless there is a credible alternative this is what happens too. Although if anyone thinks that Boris will care for their community, society in the north, British jobs and investment and the NHS then they will be in for a shock. Im not even sure the Dearne valley would have had any regeneration is it wasn't for the EU so i cant see anything coming from any new tory gov.

I think you have to step back and consider the different groups and clusters within the subset of who might vote for Johnson.

Its a pretty broad range but some characteristics will be shared. One of them is lack of questioning of the individual. Sadly, its true that some people vote for the individual and if they "like" them. You see people attaching to a group or individual and propping it up irrespective of what happens. There is clear evidence of such behaviour in this very bbs) Its no huge secret that tory HQ have been wanting him for years as he "makes people laugh"... that well known trait all PM's clearly should have!!!

The bungling bumbling rambling scruff rag tag individual is to play to a gallery. One that includes right wingers, anti establishment, racists, liars and idiots. even if that group only totalled 2m (a relatively small percentage of the country) and they could retain the core tory vote, that's more than enough to take advantage of labours slide to oblivion.

Its just sad that there are plenty who don't question, don't investigate and swallow whatever they are given hook line and sinker.

If you keep feeding the masses the utter, utter lies often enough, the masses will believe it

The ruling class are savvy enough to keep the masses where they want them. Keep the masses squabbling among themselves for the scraps offered by the ruling class.

Change will only happen when the masses come to realise this.

And no this is not a party political broadcast for the communist party (although some on here would say it is) It is the world as I see it

But even if you are selfish -its a lot less than 40% who will be better off if the Tories get their goal of "singapore style" economy so presumably at least 75% of those must just be selfish and stupid

It's not really that hard to work out. As a realistic and moderate socialist it's purely down to Corbyn. If we had a different, younger and more dynamic leader, one that is not tainted (rightly or wrongly) with a questionable history then i think we would walk a general election. Those who support Corbyn or rather those that shout everyone down and try to stifle debate through insults are the Tory's biggest asset: they perpetuate the myth that there is a real unsavoury element to the left.
Corbyn should stand down now and allow us to have a fighting chance.

Because the Labour Party as MP's like John Mann and Caroline Flint who are against Labour Party policies the leader and the labour movement, at every opportunity be it on TV or in the newspapers pull the party down, these people should cross the floor and stop being Red Parrots with Blue tails.

Through out the replies to this thread that is the usual patronising, condescending thinly veiled comments about potential Tory/Brexit voters being racist and so forth, something that never comes as a surprise.

And then people are amazed that those they mock double down in how they vote.

I hope Labour votes against an election today and Boris goes on strike as promised. He would surely lose a lot of support for doing that.

It’s all very saddening- a couple of days ago, I heard the rabid Mark Francois finally utter the words I’ve been waiting to hear (with utter dread) - the gammon proclaimed that they now needed to “drain the swamp”! We truly need to realise that he (& his ilk) are talking about us! The people of Barnsley & South Yorkshire! Don’t ever forget, these people consider us “the enemy within”!

What an arrogant condescending statement. One could argue the same of those who think McDonnell has a coherent practical and viable economic plan that would not damage the Uk far more than any Brexit worse case predictions could
