I feel for him, but I can't see where the competition is . Some big companies are desperate for staff:

Haulage firms are desperate for HGV drivers. (It's costs a fair amount to get the licence) but are paying up to £15 an hour.
It's pointless blaming the government because basically they don't give a **** about the man on the street. First and foremost you have to look after yourself and your family cos if you don't nobody else will.

 

Because he can't 'leave' that till he's got a different job?

Believe it or not, if you 'leave' a job, you lose any access to benefits, it might seem odd to us old folk that a zero hrs contract actually counts as a job in that respect.

 

Of course he can leave, he isn't in prison. Peachy said he's a reliable bloke, therefore it seems to me he would be a credit to any employer . I don't get this feeling sorry for oneself or blaming the govt .

leaving a job, despite it being terrible makes you ineligible for any benefits. If you rely on working tax credit to make up a shortfall due to ***** wages then that’s all gone. It’s quite a risk.

 

It is a risk, but certainly one worth taking if you're in a crap job. Why are we talking about relying on benefits ? It sounds like he's young, reliable and ready for work. The shittest wage of all is the giro.

 

Not feeling sorry for anyone, not blaming the govt.
Just explaining that he needs to get another job before he leaves, otherwise he's going to be starving till he gets paid from his next job. If he's amazing and gets a job within a week, and he has to wait a month till he gets paid, he's gonna need something to live on for the next 5 weeks. He'll not be entitled to any benefit if he's given up his job.

So put simply; as I said - he needs to find a new job before he 'leaves' that one.

Tell him to try this , a mate of mine went with them beginning of year and has done ok with them , they sort your benefits out and everything whilst finding you decent employment . Needs to get in before end of month though as it closes to new applications after that .

Its been like that for years. Predating Johnson.

No need to offer full time work. Been same for years in sheff in that feild.

Amazon are looking for drivers in the xhristmas run up...

 

And first are always looking for drivers. Theyll put him through his training.

 

He was washing & refuelling buses for First at one point this year. He was subjected to dreadful racism by some of the staff there & at the time took the zero hours job, after doing a clamping job that was subcontracted out from the DVLA, that had him having a knife pulled on him. The working hours meant he could not work for me at weekends, that netted him as much money as he got through the week for them, as he needed to work Friday & Saturday nights. A lot of people are caught up in a vicious trap. They don't have a lot of resources to get out of it in the current climate, despite being salt of the earth people. He is a Sheff Utd fan, so has something to be pleased about this season at least, if he can keep a roof over his head.

 

Clearly not anything like your superior wisdom as you have seen a recent documentary! FFS!

Many of us are lucky not to be in such a situation. I've been on my arse a few times, due to no fault of my own. The last time was in 2004-6 when i had a record shop. Me and my ex lived with no heating or hot water for 18 months, whilst both of us worked flat out. (My record shop went under at the time of downloads & the rise of digital DJing). I had to sell my flat, all my guitars & records to raise capital to set my DJ company up, doing digital DJing. I lost my flat I'd worked for for just short of 25 years, but was in a position to eventually bounce back. Some people don't have that luxury.

 

I wouldn't call it luck that you are in a better situation now, seems like its more down to hard work and determination than luck.

 

But he was able to start again because be had some capital behind him. A lot of folk don't even have that. Not that I'm taking anything away from him starting over, it definitely took guts and hard work.

 

Absolutely right, that was my point. My family helped me out a bit too during one particularly difficult patch. Not everyone has that support.
