I absolutely respect your decision to not wear a poppy. It’s your choice. You may even choose to give to AF charities and not wear a poppy. Again your choice. But don’t confuse British foreign policy with an opportunity to honour and support men and women who have made sacrifices in different ways to support that policy because they were employed by the crown.

 

Absolute fookin Knob, my grandads weren’t terrorists when they fought in WW2 they were fighting for our freedom. As were the tarn lads who joined the Barnsley Pals in WW1. Nowt to do with poppy police and everything to do with respect. You clearly have none.

ok i stand corrected but his overall play was far from inspiring. Maybe ive seen him play much much better, so i should say imho his display was not as good as i have seen. He actually appeared to struggle at times.

Anyone reading the last 400 years of Irish history with an objective eye cannot blame someone who identifies as Irish showing indifference to displays of British military glorification. And, yes I know Irish people fought and died for Britain and that there are different ways to look at the relatively recent encroachment of Remembrance Day into football matches.

 

Although I am a poppy wearer, I have no issues with people wishing not to wear one or acknowledge it, I would however have issues with people disrespecting it, which to be fair to McLean he doesn’t.

 

there’s plenty of opportunity to go to parades and show your respect in whatever way you see fit, so judging people either way on poppy wearing is as bit fascistic in my mind.

Don’t know where in NI he’s from, but let’s just say, taking abuse from some football fans might be easier than the issues he, his family and his friends might face if he did wear a poppy. Sometimes you have to behave in a certain way regardless of your beliefs......

 

Fook em you say ? what a tw@t We don't carry out acts of remembrance to glorify war, or to show our support for the motives of British governments who have sent our forces into battle.We remember the ordinary lads and lasses who answered the call, who fought and died to protect our country. It isn't about supporting the government, it isn't about supporting the Queen it's about paying our respects to the memory of the poor fookers who don't get to come back and voice an opinion because numb nuts they dint come back at all.
And as for it encroaching into football matches, those of you who object know the date, if it bothers you so much stay at home. The respect shown by both sets of fans today demonstrated that you're in the minority, as you should be.

 

He's from Derry mate and i think lynching would be a possibilty if he wore the poppy and showed his face round there after.

 

Exactly. Some folk don’t realise just how complicated it is.

His 2 options might be:

1) Don’t wear and face abuse for a few weeks a year from football fans.

2) Wear it to appease fans, and get his family’s house burnt down, dog shot and his friends too scared to walk out alone back home in Derry.

I don’t know all the ins and outs of it, but it wouldn’t surprise if this were his options....

 

I showed total respect today - including listening to the fruckin instructions which are beyond the same Amoeba’s abusing McLean. But I would like to know when it became a remembrance parade? And my grandad died in ww2 and my great uncle was parachuted into France, and I think about them and am grateful to their sacrifice every day. But it doesn’t mean I want to see our country turned into a poundshop USA where the sacrifice of young working men is used to justified continued imperialism.

 

You're probley right but for me he doesnt need to go as far as he does to get peoples backs up when McGuinness died he posted a picture of him and mcguiness on his social media with some tribute to him.
Nmanja Matic refuses wear one because of british forces going into Serbia but he doesnt get the stick mclean does.

 

And fair play to you Wakey Red, I think the applause was for The Last Post but it did fall back to silence which I was impressed with. On the topic of remembrance at sports events I'm all for it, it isn't a show of support for government policy uk or usa is I see it, it's an act of remembrance and respect from human beings to human beings. If you don't agree with it don't go but for a poster to put 'fook em' is bang out of order.
