I was in middle of East upper and heard booing but not song, out of interest was His from weekend/or against McLean or is there a reason they sing this?

If he doesn't want to wear a poppy fair enough but he courts controversy by turning his back on proceedings, turning his back on the English flag, quoting Bobby Sands and naming an IRA song as one if his personal favourites.

He gets abused at every ground he plays at and its not because he's Irish. There are loads of Irish playing in England, Conor for example, so why is he singled out?

 

He’s from Derry. Conor isn’t (although County Cork has always been strongly republican). But being from Derry makes an enormous difference.

 

So Barnsley reported for singing the classic We all hate Leeds scum song.. Pretty sure the FA need to visit every other club in the football league then who also sing this on a regular basis..

So why dont referees report the asay following if they make derogatory northern remarks?

Barnsley are being singled out for what reason? That should be the question..

We aren't being singled out. Well I'm not anyway but that's mainly because I tend to avoid racist chanting

Yes it was near the end of the first half I think. He spoke to the referee who then stopped the game for a while as he spoke to the fourth official who in turn went and spoke to the steward who stands between the dugouts

 

Wasn't that about the bottle thrown on the pitch?

Have to say, I wouldn't blame him if he reported it, I was very uncomfortable with what happened on Saturday, just don't want him to get further abuse if this isn't the case.

This has nothing to do with you disagreeing with his values, if you do and you've simply expressed them in rational manner then we need more people like you in this world.

 

It's possible it was about the bottle but he didn't seem to react to that at all and I would have expected the referee to have reported that immediately not wait but I could be wrong I just assumed it was about the singing.

My own personal view is that I'm torn. I understand why he feels like he does and a part of me feels that the poppy should have remained solely for those in the world wars with something else to commemorate armed forces in general (it's only a part of me not all of me) but also feel that turning away from the armed forces during the last post was unnecessarily disrespectful because that truly is for the world wars when the last post was actually used. Doesn't deserve any abuse though

 

The bottle came on after the 2nd goal- it was a good throw to be fair, might see if the chucker in questions fancies a game of cricket next summer.

The racist abuse started well before then, and McLean had a word with the ref then- who relayed to the benches.

 

This is 100% incorrect and shows a complete lack of understanding about what the poppy represents. It is to honour all those who have died serving their country since WW1. This includes Catholics, some who also served in and were killed serving in Ulster. I don't expect the likes of McClean to wear a poppy - it is entirely his choice; after all the people he chooses to disrespect died to give him that freedom. But to disrespect the Last Post was beyond the pale and, in my opinion, says so much about his real opinions.

If the poppy was to remember the Ulster conflict then I could start to understand his point of view but it isnt, not at all so I dont. As it isnt I have a strong opinion on why he takes the stance that he does.

I agree Jay, in isolation it doesn't. Wearing a poppy is a choice. Not wearing one doesn't have to be a show of disrespect in fact in many cases I would agree that it is nothing to do with respect or indeed the lack of it.
