I got my first ever smart phone 2 years ago on Black Friday and now my contract has ended (24 months at £20, now £21.30 with inflation, for iPhone XE and 4GB).

I don’t wish to upgrade to a new phone as I’m fine with the one I have. I do want to know how I stop paying the £20 odd quid now my phone is paid off. I’ve seen various good deals as it is once again Black Friday but I have no idea how to take advantage of them. When I log into 3 they predictably don’t give me the option of those, in fact the only SIM free option they will give is £23 for 8GB. Like hell am I paying that. What I need to know is, how do I stop paying this and how do I get a good deal before they have all gone? I’ve seen something about 30 days notice once out of contract but I thought out of contract was out of contract. I only signed up to 24 months but it looks like I will have to pay at least one more £20 odd pound and all the deals will be gone in 30 days. Am I screwed?

You should cancel your contract immediately and get the phone unlocked. Then you can look for a good sim-only deal. I’m with ID mobile (Carphone Warehouse) £6 a month with 2Gb of data.

Thanks but I don’t need more than 2GB realistically so would rather pay £10 or under. 3 have a deal of £8 for 8GB 12 months contract (and £40 cashback from Quidco) but I have no idea how to get it and keep my number.

So I have to phone up to cancel? I can’t believe how little I know about this.

New question: can I take out the new contract I’ve quoted above whilst on my current one (whilst the 30 days passes) and just take the hit on the extra £20? Then change my number to a random sim (say Vodafone) then change it to my new sim?

I'm with Three, £10.50 per month for 4Gb 24 months (12 months in) SIM only, for 2Gb you should be looking at around £5 to £8 or so. Good luck!

Just go into the phone shop and tell them your budget. Bit old fashioned but works for me .

Just request your pac code from 3 and give this to your new provider. You will keep your number then. If you phone 3 they will no doubt offer you a deal to stay with them. Tell them to match (or beat) what you have found elsewhere, they usually will.

Sky mobile are offering 3gig data, unlimited minutes and texts for £6 a month on a 12 month contract. Topcashback are offering £40 on this too, making it £32 for the year after cashback or £2.67 a month.

Annoyingly, I need WiFi calling as there is a black spot just over our house (literally just ours) which Virgin don’t offer, otherwise I’d have gone for that.

Order it online via topcashback. Phone 3 and ask for your PAC . When the SIM arrives in the post put it in your phone and activate in on the Sky Mobile Website. It will ask you about keeping your existing number and will transfer it over within 24 hours of you putting your PAC in.

Sky allow you to put your data in a "piggy bank" so you can save your unused data and roll it back if you need it. They run on O2 network. If you have more than one sim on the account you can share the piggy bank data between them.

Once you leave your fixed term contract you enter a rolling thirty day contract.

Call them. Their own website has a one month contract sim with the same package as yours for 16 quid... save you a few quid while you shop around.

As for the deals... it’s coming up to Christmas...

3 phones are unlocked anyway, so that shouldn't be an issue
