It’s too big but yet, we had to replace a left back with a right back, we don’t have a Centre forward of note after Woodrow. We might have a big squad but half of them are 15 years old. Or ****.
We have almost double figures worth of players who cannot get near our first team, so I would agree our squad is too big. We need quality not quantity.
Conway would have been better off maintaining his sulky silence because that interview didn’t show him in a good light did it? He thinks he can blag his way through but stands out like a fiddlers elbow. Banging on about what they did at Nice, and how Ajax are doing it with a young squad, the notable improvement under scrubber, and how we fans will just be happy with a few wins. I found him arrogant and dismissive and lacking basic knowledge.
Ajax have a history of winning European Titles, who have historically been the biggest club in one of the worlds football crazy countries. The world is going mad. It really is. Nudger has started talking politics. Its deeply worrying.
I posted about this a while back. Might have been after a couple of games under Murray. Some agreed, some disagreed but I maintain the squad is huge. I argued back then that we had just 3 first team coaches all pretty inexperienced coaching a large group of young players so how were they going to improve them? You can understand it with the big rich clubs who’ve got nearly as many coaches as players but we don’t have that luxury. The thing is us on here are just supporters on a forum & it’s a bit scary that it’s took Struber coming in & pointing it out for Conway to realise the squads too big. They should know more than us!
The squad is below average size for the Championship. Having said that 5-10 players need moving on or loaning out and we need to replace them.
I bet Charlton arent bemoaning too large a squad with all the injuries they've had. Under Murray and now Struber, no one has been out injured but this wont continue all season surely? One of our key areas to work on is set pieces and defending corners, surely stuff lihe this is done as a group not individually?
The probably with the squad is beyond maybe 2 or 3 players everyone else is basically just interchangeable with no real difference in quality. We have very much gone for quantity over quality.
I agree with you - although I agree with Conway in that it’s a long season and with injuries and closed windows, you have to go in slightly heavy to cover yourself. I don’t think the club can win here. Go in too light and suffer injuries like Charlton have - and the fans would slate the board for not having the depth. Go in too heavy and we’ve spent too much and have players doing nothing. It’s a balancing act and I don’t think the club have done wrong numbers wise - but at least have sense to reduce it slightly in January when injuries haven’t been too bad.
Could be 4 or 5 leaving in Jan. But I do think we'll sign a couple of defenders. Doubt we can afford a Championship striker, but could try and get a young lad in on loan
