...what happens to the 'UK' on the world stage? How can a seat on the UN security council be justified for example? Just a thought amongst many thoughts
I don't think Scotland will....still a million Scots who voted in Indyref haven't bothered turning out out since.
Democracy hey? Looks to me like Scotland want to stay in the EU and have their independence Surrly the will of the people has to be upheld?
I think it's nailed on Ian...and I'm not being deliberately awkward to say that...but I genuinely think it will be very hard to get over the line.
Could you explain your reasons mate. My view is if we live in a democracy the will of Scotland must be heard. But if UK is a dictatorship we are no better than N Korea. As I said earlier the eyes of EU and the rest of the world are watching.
Last post for me tonight mate...I'm p***ed and tired...I think the SNP will lose the referendum as and when it happens...as we've discussed before I fully support Scots right to have the question answered but I don't think the votes are there...there is that large bloc of almost 1m votes that haven't been used since 2014...I think they'll come back into play when the chips are down ( if you're a unionist that is )
I have to agree Ian. The results from Scotland last night give you a mandate for another IndyRef in my humble opinion. I don't think you will win (again just my opinion) but the mandate is loud and clear.
Independence would absolutely **** it in a second referendum. The Scottish people's views on Brexit demonstrated a clear divergence from England and being forced to tag along with Brexit despite voting resoundingly against it will massively push people towards independence and self-governance.
Before I desperately wanted Scotland to stay as I feel more part of a common country with them than those down south. Now they need to get out as soon as possible.
I still believe were stronger together, but after last nights events I wouldn't blame any scot in the slightest to vote independence. An interesting thing from yesterday's results, if you class Tories and Brexit as leave parties and the rest as another referendum it shows 53% of the country still want another say. I know things aren't as simple as that though.
Have spent the morning looking at houses online in Scotland and Ireland. The Mrs sounds keen to move. Luckily, I just need to be near an airport and I can carry on working in my current job
As I understand it "For a future referendum on Scottish independence to have a binding outcome, it would need to receive the consent of the British Government through a Section 30 order." (according to Wikipedia). Boris Johnson has already said that consent would not be given. The Scots could in theory take it to the High Court but we all know that the Tory Government doesn't give a toss about what the High Court says (remember Prorogation). On the other hand the Tories could say let Scotland go and take their Westminster MPs with them, increasing the Government majority by anything up to 55 at a stroke.
Nailed on 'leave' for me as well Ian. Might be 12 months, might be two years, might be five years. But it's coming. Just a comment for other posters. This issues in Scotland are not all about the Brexit sh*tshow. Independence was coming well before Brexit. All Brexit has done is accelerate the leaving. Scotland has been a 'different' country to the rest of the UK for some time. I just hope the UK Govt can help with the split as amicably as possible. We need to stay friends for the future.
Rightly or wrongly Scotland won’t get another referendum. Not for another five years at least. Nicola Sturgeon can pontificate as much as she likes but there is no reason or pressure for Boris to grant one. Just as much as remainers are going to have to put up with a referendum result they don’t like, so is Scotland
