I really can’t help but wonder what the fcukk is going on. This should have been the most obvious swing away from Tory ever, but it’s gone completely the other way. Against all the evidence which proves they’ve been absolutely terrible for this country over the last decade.

They’ve split the country in 2, they’ve killed people through Austerity, they’ve destroyed the NHS, and pretty much every public service going and they’ve been caught lying on 88% of their advertisements.

Time to batten down the hatches. This area in particular is in for a rocky ride.

 

Jeremy Corbyn is the simple reason. Unelectable, always was. The Tories biggest asset. It is why Boris, Gove etc constantly brought his name up at every opportunity during the campaign. He should have resigned already but staying to over see the election of the next leader, ie another left winger. Hasn’t he already done enough damage? He needs to be gone this very day.

 

Hardly a surprise - it was close last time, so was expected to be close again.

Blame Corbyn - good to see he’s going. Hopefully it’ll lead to the party being rebuilt, but with McDonnell being there still, I doubt it will.

 

Although not my constituency (John Healey is my MP) I'd put the result down a couple of things:

1. Brexit
2. The sheer unadulterated (that's a word of irony eh BoJo) bias in the MSM

The turkeys have voted for Christmas.................at Christmas time - oh the irony again

Given time, I sincerely hope Corbyn's proven right. I, for one, do not blame Corbyn at all.

I still believe in socialism.

This just isn't backed up by the votes. Now that's not to say he didn't have *some* effect, but the vote was another Brexit referendum. Does anyone seriously think Labour voters ignored Brexit and voted for Tory on domestic policy?

No it’s not. For the 50000th time, Austerity is a policy and a very right wing Tory one at that.

Labour didn’t create the global financial crisis, US banks did FFS.

Folk have to realise that for the Tories this election, called on Brexit only ('Get Brexit done') was an easy way to campaign because nearly all of their base support was in Leave seats. Seats they were going to lose were to Remain were minimal.

For Labour their support was split massively between Leave and Remain in large amounts. Whilst it's easy to say, 'they should have backed Leave 100%' that would have put at risk all the Remain seats. Now, I don't know the exact numbers and how that would have played out, but it's possible/likely that the result wouldn't have been much different in terms of the number of seats they lost.

They decided to hedge their bets and offer another referendum on a deal they would negotiate and back that with an ambitious domestic policy. That is a reasonable, nature decision to make but unfortunately not one that plays well with 50% of people who want Leave and Leave only.

 

I hope those In the north who voted tory get exactly what they deserve and what is clearly coming. They have learned no lessons from Thatcher. I rarely wish misery on anyone but this was their choice so let’s see how it works out.

 

I woke up thinking that as well, but what about the millions of poor sods in those constituencies who didn't vote Tory, but are going to end up suffering just like the rest?

 

On the plus side, it's nearly the weekend.

 

The difference may sound negligible, but imo it's important because most voters voting Tory weren't genuinely saying 'I want a Tory MP' because the Tories are great', they were simply voting 'TO GET BREXIT DONE', and getting a Tory MP is a side effect of that vote. I think it will take some people a while to realise what they have done.

The question is can they hold the vote? On the one hand leopards don't change their spots and people will see through any empty promises from a party that historically has had no wish to improve the lot of their new constituencies. On the other hand 10 years of austerity gives them entry at the first floor and any improvements could be seen as favourable.

 

I take your point and I feel for them. Maybe it will shine a light on what their interests are and they will fight harder for them next time. Maybe the pain of what is to come. Isolated uncared for by central govt zero hour contracts with zero health and safety and no access to health care is needed to zap some life into them.
