Almost enjoyed yesterday. But can someone for the love of Christ explain to me why Cauley Woodrow, one of the most instinctive finishers we've had in decades playing in a team that creates loads of chances is being played in midfield please?
Results and performances since the change in role suggest it’s working. A lot of his goals are distance shots too, so it shouldn’t affect him. If you watch his actual positions when attacking, it’s not that different to how he was.
Browns energy, ability in the air, work rate and speed is working well with chaplin creating his goal scoring run, its working better than the chaplin woodrow combination which struggled for goals. Bahre, Thomas could both play the attacking point of the diamond better than Woodrow. I wouldnt change Brown and Chaplin yet and Woodrow on the bench wouldnt go down well.
I think he suits him though. He is probably the best on the ball compared to Chaplin and Brown. So playing the deeper role ala Bergkamp is a complement. Results show it’s working too. Chaplin also has made several comments about it over the few weeks saying exactly the same. If the results are good, I wouldn’t change it. Club first, player second.
If we get a big fee for Woodrow in January so Struber can firm up the defence and midfield with experience and sign a striker that suits the system then Woodrow may go. That may be why he is playing in this position to keep him on the pitch to maintain his value rather than on the bench and going for less. Woodrow is quality by the way.
He should be played in his favourite position. He's said in the press that he likes his new role in the team, but then he's not going to say he hates it is he? He is a centre forward and will find a club who will play him as one. Of our best players he looks like the most likely to move on next month.
Genius move. “After receiving a significant offer for Cauley, we felt it was right to accept it as we have plenty of options in his attacking midfield position and the player intimated he wanted to leave to fulfill his ambition of playing as a centre forward. Cauley joins former teammate George Moncur at Luton, who also have a number of other former reds in their squad. Barnsley FC would like to place on record their thanks for Cauley’s efforts in his time at the club. The fee received is undisclosed, but the club can confirm that it has retained an interest in Cauley’s future.” Followed by “Barnsley FC are delighted to announce the signing of Austrian forward Anudder Jungsster, 17, on a four and a half year contract. Anudder has shown great promise playing for SC Ritzing, of the Austrian Regional League East. Anudder is yet to play a first team game but did get a brace in the under 23’s in a friendly against the top amateur side in Vienna. Jerry Wurstmakker, 32, master butcher and goalkeeper, said ‘he’s the best 17 year old I’ve played against in at least a year’. Anudder goes straight into the squad for the game against Huddersfield Town and is in contention to start after the transfer of Conor Chaplin to Charlton Athletic was concluded yesterday.”
Did you ever see Martin Peters play ? Woodrow's link-up play yesterday was excellent. As for Halme being in front of him, look at Basham at Sheff U. defenders and mid fielders getting beyond their forwards are much harder to pick up. Ari Haan was a Dutch left back in the 'total football' national team who would pop up on the right wing.
He had our best chance in the first half that he should have buried. Had other chances that he's missed in that role at Millwall and at Blackburn, plus the goal against Reading. He arrives late and as an additional striker when Chaplin and Brown pull their defence all over the place. Creates additional space. Plus he's tidy on the ball, puts a shift in, and has a decent shot on him as we've seen. I imagine Struber watched our games from earlier in the season and saw how deep he was dropping anyway, and thought he could utilise him there. Was poor against Millwall overall but really good contribution yesterday.
