Did 12 million people really sit down to watch Gavin and Stacey on Christmas day?

Did just under one in five people in the entire country sit down and watch Gavin and Stacey?

Seems highly implausible to me. That's a ridiculously high number compared to how many people used to watch the actual show and considering not only how many people don't watch TV on Christmas day due to having family gatherings etc but also the competition that the 5 basic channels now have.

Perhaps the BBC include everyone who has a bought TV licence in their viewing figures whether they watch a show or not ;)

Other than it being a TV program, I have no idea what it is.

My knowledge goes far enough to know that it's got James Corden in it, him from would I lie to you who's name escapes me at the minute and that presumably at least two of the characters are called Gavin and Stacey.

Oh and that it got between 1 and 5 million viewers in its original run which I only know because it said in one of the reports about how many people watched it the other day.

Maybe most of the 12 million just forgot to turn over due to falling asleep, playing charades/pictionary/hungry hippos or too much ale after watching the Queen at 3pm.

I believe the figures, it became a cult show initially then became mainstream. The first few series were very well written and amusing, they toned it down when it reached the masses which is usual.

The missus and I watched it on Christmas day night, wasn't perfect but accompanied my cheese, biscuits and port quite well after a long day.

I can't watch Mrs Brown on the Beeb anymore, after seeing the live show it pales in comparison.

I watched it as did most people I know as it’s one of the greatest original sitcoms of the last 20 years and was making a one-off return for a Christmas special after a decade off screen.

I love the show and the show 10 years on retained enough of the original for it to be amusing watching for Christmas day..

Never watched it but that estimate is just what it is.
Isn't it measured in just a thousand houses and then multiplied up?
All depends on the demographic of the chosen houses e.g. none of my extended family watch it but I'm sure the bulk of households in Wales would have had it on.

It was always done that way, but do they now include iplayer viewers or is it just the live broadcast? If it's the former, the figures should now be more accurate.

Just done a Google search and you're right, they do it both ways so as you say it should be a bit more accurate.

I’d never seen it but other family members were fans of the series. Having said that they were disappointed with the Xmas Day special.

I couldn’t work out if it was meant to be funny or not and came away thinking it was yet another reason not to watch anything featuring James Corden.

Think you needed to have watched the prior episodes to " get it".
