Kevin Betsy vs Stockport County. All he had to do was square it to Gorre and we'd have gone 4-0 up instead he went himself and missed that lead to their opening goal the game finished 3-3.
For sheer gravity of the misses..... Darren Barnard's penalty miss in the playoff final to level the game at 2-2 could be seen as the start of the clubs decline into administration. we never recovered from that miss and got hit on the break twice in 8 minutes after that because we were committing players forward. Odejayi's miss in the FA cup against Cardiff was the other that springs to mind.
I think I remember Steve Cooper taking a penalty in a penalty shoot-out and he gently chipped it down the middle expecting the keeper to dive. The keeper didn't move and just caught it. I may have dreamed/made the above up.
Thought it was 1 1 when Barnard missed? That could be my memory though. I also remember blaming Miller for the equaliser thought he should have saved it. Did we not then go 3 1 down before Hignett scored our 2nd pen. Then we nearly equalised through Hristov before Ipswich got the 4th and killed us off.
Match at Grimsby yonks back. Our player missed from under the bar. Black lad, can't remember his name.
Speaking of Grimmersby, our own Gerry Taggs missed a right flopper against them at Oakwell, in season 1991-92. We were hammering them and he charged upfield like a true striker, looking for another goal. But as the rubbishy biased Leeds/Sheff Wensdy man John Helm said on commentary... ".. Ohh dear me..". That summed it up.
Handyside v Brentford. Corner whipped in and it was headed towards him, he was stood virtually on the goal line. Had he not touched it it would have gone in but he tried to flick it on the back of his head and it hit the bar and the goalie caught it. It was 500 times worse than it sounds, I'm sure alot will remember that one. Him and Haywood were 2 of the worst players I've ever witnessed in my life
If I remember correctly one Rickie Lambert scored for them to make it 3-3 and then we hit the bar straight after!
Given the importance of the fixture the only answer to this question is Odejayi in the FA Cup semi-final. We were getting on top in the game, an equaliser was surely on it's way .... all he had to do was shoot across the keeper to make it 1-1 and I genuinely believe that we would've gone on to win that game and play in the final. The FA Cup Final. Barnsley. In the FA Cup Final. Against Portsmouth. We could've won the thing! But he didn't, he went near post and missed the narrower target, and twelve and a half years later I am still feeling the pain of that miss.
