The whole country certainly did not vote for the SNP, not even close. However I believe that the SNP now have a mandate to request a second referendum. I'm pretty sure that any request will be rejected but if it isn't then I think that remain part of the union will win again which will end the debate.
It has just been on the Scottish news that its official. We in Scotland now have more food banks than Mcdonald restaurants. If ever there was a more compelling reason for Scotland to rid ourselves of a failing UK. This surely must be it.
Surely an independent Scotland would be in the same situation as an independent England. Both out of Europe and isolated. The difference would be Scotland has explored the possibility of rejoining the EU and our application would be eagerly accepted.
Fabulous place is Skye. Our Doctor from Donny retired to his croft at Camus Cross at the side of a Loch. First time I visited, there was nothing there. Now it's a developed area but has still lost none of its beauty. Depending when you go, make sure you take a head net you can put over your head around teatime to keep the midges at bay. Another way to repel them is to take garlic tablets a couple of weeks before you travel. They hate garlic apparently. https://must-see-scotland.com/midges-in-scotland
Hold on Ian - don't discount the Taffs in all this - if Scotland leave the Union that leaves England AND Wales and N Ireland. I think if the majority of the people of Scotland believe that Scotland's application to rejoin the EU will be 'eagerly accepted' then they will vote to leave - if there's a doubt about being readmitted they will vote to remain with England Wales and N Ireland.
That's a coincidence because before you open your mouth I'd tell people you're from Barnsley same as me. Nowadays I make sure I tell people you're from Darfield and I'm not.
I'm only repeating what was reported after Nicola had talks with EU leaders late last year. But I'm not so sure about the majority wanting to remain under the tories and what is looking like a dictatorship rather than a union of equals. Boris does not give us any cause for optimism.
You have just got to take the alternative Ferry if you go to Skye if it’s still in operation. Been quite a few years now since I was up there, (before the road bridge) It reminded me of a sort of oversized raft that was big enough for a couple of vehicles and a couple of motor bikes
Whatever Arabian Ian supports... that'll be my stance. If he wants out or in I'll support that. If he was a horse, i'd back him... and Nudger? well, he's not a follower. and he is readable....
ian. Stop getting drawn in. It’s only a matter of time before Scotland goes its own way. No one blames you and there’s no right for the English of all people to deny a nation it’s sovereignty if that is the wish of the majority (unless you’re Ireland).
I used the ferry either from Oban or Kyleakin over to Skye the first couple of visits I made , but as you say Ian, the main access now is via the bridge. Through our former Doctor ( McClean) he introduced me to a fellow crofter Donald who for a reasonable fee would let you aboard his boat " The Blavern" and take you back to the mainland. His wife Peggy only spoke Gaelic and had never ever been off the island. Fantastic people. They would do anything they could to help you.
Still more poverty in England. I remember George Galloway ripping into a uniformed Scottish guy on tele for suggesting that parts of Scotland was poor and England wasn’t. You lot up there get more of the cake than what we do in Yorkshire. Barnett Formula. Hopefully when you’ve gone the money will stop in Yorkshire rather than going further north.
I hope you are not pinning your hopes on this tory govt, which you voted in, changing anything for the better anytime soon.
It's a matter for the scottish people in my opinion, obviously including yourself. I believe we in the North, like Scotland, have suffered from having London centric governments for decades and can't blame anyone for wanting to change that. However, I wouldnt be quite so sure as Sturgeon says on the EU question, the subject of good articles recently in the Economist and the Times. After reality bites on a big budget cut for it when the UK leaves, the EU may not want another net benefactor which is how it may see Scotland. Scotland's current government expenditure is 107% of GDP which breaches the rules for the euro, a pre-requisite of joining. There would either have to be cuts in government expenditure or the EU having to bend it's own rules. France gets away with a lesser breach but other countries, most notably Italy have been told to stick to austerity budgets and have had anti-austerity budgets rejected by the EU. I can't see countries like Italy and Greece allowing an overspend in a Eurozone country when they aren't allowed to do it themselves
