Obviously good players who one or two people have / had an inexplicable dislike of.

Sheron was not crap, just exceedingly poor value in my opinion.

I have to agree about Vat of Lard, who was only ever decent against Blackburn when used as a nuisance up front. McPhail - I was also underwhelmed by him.

I guess if we're looking at players I didn't rate but some others did, it would be Kevin Richardson, Steve Chettle, and Eric "stepping stone" Tinkler.

Chris Morgan - obvious reasons but was a solid cb the turncoat

On his debut I was stood at the side of some old guys who were adamant that Sir Ronnie was never a footballer, never would be and was a total waste of money.

There's been a long, very long history of our fans having this dislike of particular players in the side at the time as people on here have mentioned. The oldest one I remember is Kenny Brown of the early/mid seventies vintage.

I would like to think it is borne out of frustration, wanting to have the best possible side at all times. However, it is equally as possible that people are just not happy unless they are moaning, you know the type who'd say 'they don't wanna go up'

    Sunday morning rant over.:)

One of my friends described Ronnie as a ‘pig in a poke’ after his debut against Sheffield Wednesday. I reminded him of this several times over the years!!

To be fair on his debut he wasn’t very good but one thing that I learned many years ago is not to judge a player on their debut performance. We have had some great debuts from players who were rubbish after and a few average debuts from Players who have turned out to be quite good. But to go back to that era Ian Banks got loads of abuse from fans around me and I never understood why

I saw Glavin in his very first game for us at Chessy in what must have been a preseason friendly. He certainly didn’t look like legend material that day

I was, and still am, one of those people who were extremely unimpressed by our summer transfer activities, and made by feelings known, particularly when it became clear that we were totally unprepared for the challenge we faced. To be fair, I recall you as being one of those who saw things differently. Having different points of view is surely why a forum such as this exists. Fickleness does not come into it. The fact is that we still sit in a relegation spot, but recent results are at least giving us a chance of escape. Some people will see this as success if it is achieved. Others will simply be thankful that our transfer dealings have not ultimately led to relegation, and that lessons might be learned for the future. However, we are only part-way through January and a lot can still happen.

I first saw him at Donny in a pre-season friendly looking about two stone overweight. Actually, I’m not sure that Chesterfield was his debut. I think that game was on the Tuesday after we lost to Wednesday the previous Saturday. I recall reading that Glavin had been told by Clarke that he was to man-mark one of the Chesterfield players, to which Ronnie responded that he didn’t mark players, they marked him! Although he got progressively fitter he was dropped for the match against Sheffield United away (lost 2-0 I think), but then recalled and scored the winner against Blackburn away. The rest is history as they say.

He played for Mansfield so not a one man club. I just dont get the love in with hassell he was bang average at best. Just hung around along time. Hate all the sir bobby crap. Weve have a 100 better players come and go but cos he hung around so long every loves him. Foster was better than him and he was club for ages but people just pass him over. I find it strange. I used eaden as a name because hassell isnt even in the top 3 best right backs ive seen at oakwell and people say hes best player ever.....

Ray mchale (as previously mentioned).....years later one of our better players stated that he was the "handbrake" that let all the others of that era, play like they did.
Further to that all the other players really appreciated the shift he always put in.

I suppose I’d go with Craig Davies on this. Granted he could occasionally score a beauty & had that incredible evening at Birmingham but I thought his all round game was terrible. One of the worst first touches I’ve ever seen from a striker at championship level.

Used to argue with a lad near me for ages that we’d be much better off without him & felt pretty smug when we started climbing the table after he left although signing O’Grady & going 3-5-2 were bigger factors in that

It was his home debut I saw, definitely wasn't the player he became, but remember talking to my mate and we thought there was definite potential. Never dreamed how much like :p

Barnsley fans, like most other clubs supporters don't always have sound judgement when it comes to certain players. I remember more than a few who didn't rate a certain Ronnie Glavin. True, his first few games weren't spectacular, but without bigging myself too much, I do generally have a little more patience than that. Some of us appear to expect too much too soon.
It's also true though that we have had some right old rubbish who haven't shown any talent at all.
