Yah Clive also another who didnt benefit from rule changes as he couldnt kick off the deck either. A bit on the short side too but his positioning was OK. Watson also couldn't punch either , his haymakers at corners not good for the confidence of the defenders.
I can't quite decide if Gjorgji Hristov belongs in this thread or not. All I can say is that despite him scoring 8 goals for us in our Premiership season, I never took to him. I remember walking up to Oakwell for our first game against West Ham and seeing his name on the back of loads of shirts. I thought then how strange football fans are, to put Hristov's name on their shirts before he'd even kicked a ball for us. What if he turns out to be rubbish, I thought? I dislike him even more these days. But that's because I always have to faff about Googling him to spell his name correctly.
My issue with Baker, old mate, was that because of his height he never came out for crosses into the box, especially when there was a big striker in there. With Watson, it's the exact opposite. He'd regularly come for crosses, then get nowhere near them. In recent years, whenever our goalies have made these errors, they get well and truly pilloried. I'll admit I have many bad habits, but picking on our players on a regular basis isn't one of them. If anything, I'm quite soft with them.
Baker was pre-internet era, Watson was in the early days of the first incarnation of the BBS if I remember correctly. No doubt they would both have been pilloried too had they played in the current era of micro-observation of players.
I asked a friend of mine last night - she supports PNE . She said: personally i can't see the point of him! not done too much for us so far if u got more than £1 for him you've done good business!
Phew, thought it was just me. I liked Clive, despite not being a decent height, but got fed up of Dave W being caught in no mans land and being beaten by an agonisingly slow-moving looping header. My list: Brad Potts, David Watson and, to a lesser extent, Disco Devaney.
Made me smile this has leebrilleaux! Not sure if this was just in the part of the Brewery Stand I stood in but Kenny was known somewhat ironically as 'Bomber'. My Grandad was his biggest critic for standing off players rather than getting stuck in. Just checked and he played 267 times for us. From the same era (I think) I remember Frank Sharp also getting some stick.
Big Kev Nutting (RIP) disliked Clive Baker with a vengeance, often shouting out 'encouragement' at the top of his voice Strange to believe but some people in the dim and distant past didn't like the languid style of Paul Futcher and Bobby Doyle who along with Ronnie Glavin remain my favourite players of all time
Think that was his first home game first I remember was Lincoln away in cup I think . I was probably one of those blokes that said he’d never make a player . I’m the the most “gladdest” person in the world that I was proved massively wrong and I got to see the master week in week out . On looking at fixtures your right it was Wendy and Chessy first two games . Don’t know where I’ve got Lincoln from and could have been bobby downes . I should have consulted biglil before opening my big mouth
