Get rid if the diamond. It doesn't work. Passing became so much easier 2nd half when we had width. Apart from the minor snag that we were 2-0 down, it was a joy to watch.

Put Jack Walton in the nets. Teach the young German lad how to take throw-ins and put him in. Put Cauley back up front. Play a back 3 as in the 2nd half and go **** or bust.

It was simple for Charlton, in the first half. In the second Charlton were hanging on at times.

Said this before after Derby game Darren Fletcher was asked if we’d be relegated and he gave an emphatic yes.
When pushed he said it was because we played the diamond and we didn’t have the players to play it.
He went on to say the diamond is very difficult to play against with the right players, but ours are just not good enough and as a result it becomes easy to counter.

Firm believer that good players can play any formation, and $hit players can’t play in any. I don’t think formation has much to do with things tbh. They’re just not championship level players.

Agreed, second half was good; admittedly Charlton no longer had the incentive to attack us which might have had a bearing (!)
Simoes looked good in his role; play with 3 centre backs and move Brown to wing-back.
We're down now, experiment, who gives a ****.

Very true, but given that our players are, on average, inferior to most opposition, surely we should try to find a system that suits them better?

I thought we bought Green and Wilks as 2 run at defender type wingers with pace. And then we play without proper wingers - what's all that about? I'd prefer to scrap the diamond and use full width of the pitch to create more space through the middle.

To an extent yes, but as an extreme Messi wouldn’t make a good centre half.
All joking aside to play with wing back types you need pace and good decision making.
I played most positions and formations in defence and midfield to a very good standard but would never in a million years been able to play wingback cos I was too slow.
