Once again BMBC and Barnsley FC conspire to make access to Oakwell about as difficult as it could be. One of many reasons while I will not be attending after this season.
Matchday road, interchange and temporary bridge closures for Barnsley FC home games will be in place earlier than usual for the upcoming derby against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday 8 February 2020. Football supporters and town centre visitors are being reminded about changes to the Jumble Lane crossing for the upcoming home game – when additional road and car park closures will also be in place. Jumble Lane crossing was closed last year by Network Rail because of safety reasons. A temporary bridge was put in place to allow pedestrians to safely cross over the railway line. For Barnsley’s home game against Sheffield Wednesday (Saturday 8 February, 1.30pm kick-off), Jumble Lane bridge will close at 12.30pm and re open at 4.30pm for the safety of fans and other users. Times are subject to change dependent on operational needs. The alternative walking routes include: Midland Street, Eldon Street and Schwäbisch Gmünd Way or Kendray Street, Mayday Green, Cheapside, Wesley Street, Lambra Road, Pontefract Road, Grove Street There will be no access for supporters via the Alhambra Centre. Barnsley fans will be directed from Barnsley Interchange along Schwäbisch Gmünd Way, along Pontefract Road and then Queen’s Road to and from Oakwell. Sheffield Wednesday fans travelling by car should access the Queen’s Ground away car park via Harborough Hill and Queen’s Street rather than Pontefract Road and Grove Street. Following the game, home supporters are asked to leave along Pontefract Road while away fans should go from Queen’s Ground. Check with your train operators whether extra carriages will be put on for fans, as there may be delays in accessing trains and fans should expect to have to queue and consider the weather forecast. The Hackney Carriages taxi rank – previously located on Midland Street - is now located on Eldon Street. Road closures: Roads will be affected from 12.30pm to 4.30pm Supporters are also reminded that for this Saturdays’ game: Market Gate Car park will be closed. Supporters are advised to use alternative town centre parking. [Good Luck with that one!!!] In addition, a number of closures to roads and access points will be in place around the town. Part of Eldon Street North will be closed in both directions from 12.30pm between its junction with Schwabisch Gmund Way and the Interchange entrance with diversions via Old Mill Lane, Huddersfield Road, Church Street and Regent Street. The part closed will reopen as soon as operational needs allow. Part of Pontefract Road will be closed from 12.30pm. The part closed will reopen as soon as operational needs allow. Schwabisch Gmund Way will be closed from 12.30pm - associated side-streets will be affected by this closure. The road will be re-open as soon as operational needs allow. Harborough Hill - Northbound off and Southbound off exit slip roads will be closed.
Did you attend this season or the last one? The football club are only passing on the council message to be fair. They're nothing to do with the closures.
What's the club got to do with it? And I'm not sure what your point is in your other post, but the reason for the earlier than usual closures is because the match is earlier than usual...
I've not got a clue what that response is about. They are building a new town centre, it would be pretty impossible to do it without causing disruption. It's been going on for about 3 year now and there's still 18 months left. Its closed earlier than usual due to the earlier kick off I'd imagine. The new car park is shut due to safety concerns during matchday and rightly so.
I am simply pointing out in response to your remark "Really? Because of a closed bridge?" that there are quite a few other factors which have made access to the ground on foot difficult from town, particularly for those who are older or have health concerns. What has that got to do with the club? Two things, in my opinion. Firstly, the poor decision (my opinion) to site the Fan Zone behind the East Stand has resulted in increased demand for parking in the South Stand Car Park. That in turn has increased the delays in exiting that car park, particularly given the fairly amateurish attempts by what appear to be young and inexperienced staff allotted to the supervision of the exit arrangements. My experience has regularly been of an hour's delay before I have been able to get out of the car park itself. Once you achieve that, you experience the shambolic traffic arrangements put in place by BMBC. So the main car park has become a non-starter so far as I am concerned. My second criticism of the club is that they appear to have done little to negotiate easing the access arrangements to get to Oakwell with the Council, who are after all 50% owners of the ground and surrounding areas. The effect of the decision to close the shiny new Market Gate car park is to put pressure on the other car parks in town such that locating a parking space within town has become increasingly difficult on a Saturday match day. If you are lucky enough to find one, you can then enjoy the extended walk to the ground caused by the obstruction of all the natural routes on foot. Some will disagree with me - that's fine. But this describes my experience. And when you combine it with the way in which the club is being run (which defrauds the fans in my view) it is another disincentive to attend - in my opinion.
Jumble lane hasn’t got anything to do with Barnsley FC. They are just trying to communicate the councils arrangements to our fans.
The East Stand car park is for the exec floor. They sold the spare passes in the past but they werent available this season. Most people complaining about this do so because they were willing to pay to get out quicker. Apart from a few spaces, again for the exec floor, accesible parking has always been in the south stand car park. I should say, I know of at least 1 person who made a huge deal about these parking spaces. Every match day last season they walked from the east stand car park, past the accessible parking, into Redfearn’s bar. Before the game they walked back to the east stand and took their seats in far end of the upper east. They were offered accessible parking at the front of the south stand but it wasnt good enough and they said they wouldnt come again. I know that wasnt true either.
One thing I don't get about the closures is why isn't the market gate carpark open? £2 park and ride to the ground would make a killing for the council and solve most of the problems with people walking everywhere. Away fans should also be bussed from the ground to the station so they are able to be segragated
I'd thought of this too. Park and ride would absolutely be the way to go if it was feasible. But if it requires any investment from this lot, forget it.
