To be fair that could mean the police officer who hit him or it could mean an officer (as in a different guy) and then it mentions the injured officer again (still not the guy with the batten) and refers to him as the officer because he'd already been mentioned in the article.

I honestly can't believe that anyone would think the circumstances leading up to it in any way mitigate it.

He has taken a run up, and hit someone from behind with a potentially lethal weapon. I have several friends in the police and if it were any one of them I would be telling them what an absolute cockwomble they had been.

The lad could of been killed. This wasn't a huge dust up between gangs with the copper surrounded and worried for his safety. He could have killed that lad very easily indeed. Barring a single assailant pulling a knife the police should not be swinging at anyone's head.

It's a separate incident. The copper who hit the youth however could have suffered a hamstring injury in his haste to beat him :)

That's what I meant, it's not clear if they mean injuries sustained in the same incident to the officer that used the baton.

This quite simply has to result in the officer ending up with a custodial sentence, nothing else will cut the mustard. If he doesn’t get a lengthy sentence then I would imagine there will be appeals against sentencing up and down the country based on the precedent of this outcome.

    The cop should be sacked.

Lets pretend the 16 year old has punched the cop & then turned his attention to another lad & is booting him in the head so pretty much the worst case scenario & there’s still no excuse for running over & cracking him on the back of the head.

Legs, hip, back etc then maybe it’s understandable but back of the head is dangerous & he could’ve killed or seriously injured him. As bad as the wound is it could’ve been a lot worse.

More likely suspended on full pay whilst an investigation takes place, then quietly returned to duty.

The absolutely worst he can expect is to be given the opportunity to resign. From the copper’s point a view it’s unfortunate that he’s probably not old enough to take early retirement on a full pension.

That’s what typically seems to happen in these cases.

The thing that gets me, is that Woman who says she’s his mum, why didn’t she try to intervene before the fighting started.

Irrespective of who he supported, he didn't deserve being so seriously injured.

Looks like he's bit of a little **** too. He's on a video a little earlier being naughty as well (on Eldon street). Still doesn't make any difference to the brutal force put upon him. Hopefully the youth will face the courts and get a banning order: might be up the same day as PC 'head-smasher'.

Cover up very likely. I bet they don't release footage of the police officer being assaulted

I agree he needs educating but he should never be allowed on duty again. Why the hell would you try and kill someone for having a scuffle?
