Totally agree. I’ve got to say he’s a proper likeable chap. If there were more of him in football, the game would be better for it. Down to earth, self-deprecating, funny and not fully money driven.
i usually watch undr the cosh but think i'll give this a miss, forgot he even turned out for us and guessing he was on about a 3-3 draw with stoke which he didn't even make the bench, can quite easily understand why he was listed the following month but still cheated the club/fans out of £1000's for months after, and never played again in! yet folk slagging davey off here, there's only 1 ***** that should be mentioned in this thread
oh, wait he found his spark again, after ? drunk ? performances for kings lynn he's now cooking on gas as an electrician! cheers for the memories
No thread about Davey should pass without some sort of comment from me.... Lol... No doubt many will recall my hatred for the man.. At the time and no doubt ever since.. I lost count of the arguements Ive got involved in when talking about Davey... I feel justified to some point ( sad I know) now that I have read the comments from Johnson and especially Goldthopes post... I still maintain to this day our poor league position was down to Davey and his poor tactics... And it appears I could have been right.. I also at the time stated he should never be allowed to manage in football again as I wouldn't want to wish him on to anybody else...let alone my worse enemy.. I recall an in depth conversation with Brian Howard another who didn't have a good word for him and told me more or less what Goldthope states..( Davey was also instrumental in part to his leaving due to some heated exchanges of view's and Davys insistence he was always right) At Liverpool Davey was telling the boys to defend and they themselves ignored him the rest is history... When he was in charge of coaching the young uns he favored young James Cryne over far more talented lads. I wonder why... in fact he let 3 lads go to my knowledge who should never have been shown the door ..one in particular who's father had to be restrained from cracking him,at the time, no not for letting his lad go but for what and how he delivered the news.. all delivered with contempt lack of feeling or remorse reducing the lad to tears then telling him to man up and stop crying... Followed by the comment you are pathetic.... That is what pushed his dad to swing for him... Yes pathetic could be a better discription when discribing Davey smugness shown throughout his delivery... The Davey sneer.. Many witnessed that... He often looked at you if you were something on the bottom of his shoe... Then there was the time if what I got told was correct and I've no reason to disbelieve it.. It was Daveys style.... he told one young lad who we had on trial he'd never make a footballer let alone a striker that was the mark of the man... Arrogant and ignorance all wrapped up into one..full of himself . ...step forward one Newcastle striker some years later Demba Ba if memory serves me right and yes there where others... Davey... He was your typical brown nose...yes man... Who's so called files on every player cheated a living... Ryan kidd was his brother in law if memory also serves me right and up to his appointment had been working in a factory in Bolton I believe...another sour faced txxt Yes Davey in my opinion was a tool in them days and no doubt still is... ...
Yep, absolute bellend, ended my career on Oakwell AM for absolutely nothing. And Rob Knowles and others had no backbone to stand up to him. Water under the bridge and that, but every time his name comes up it reminds me.
You didn't know then on the day he became caretaker manager he is reputed to have told the scouting team that as and when he got the job full time they would be dismissed. Head scout was then well respected scout in the game.
Davey also let JCR do whatever he wanted on the pitch, he also was responsible for Shuker leaving, Nardiello leaving and also brought in Odejayi
Pissing the bed Bullying Being rude Letting Demba Ba go surely the greatest crime was signing Odejayi though
Hang on a minute, James Cryne was in the academy? Having seen him play that seems incredible. He may have only been having a laugh as it was a charity game I watched but he looked a million miles off that kind of standard
Very interesting, thank you goldthorpe. Thats kind of the feedback i had heard from someone at the club too (well you have more detail). Didnt Davey have Mosotto (the Chilean bloke) too?
Had to laugh about him p1ss1ng the bed... Imagine Saturday regarding songs... He p1ssed in the bed he p1ssed in the bed His secrets now out Simon Davey he p1sses the bed... lol Surely.... Now.... it wouldn't happen lol
Lovely read that. Reminds me of my own story about him I have mentioned over the years on here about him. Massive queue for Liverpool tickets stood queuing for approx eight hours. It's about half 4 and he comes out of the door to the right of the box office with his head down in silence, gets in his 4x4 and speeds off like a mad man. No hello, autographs, pictures, thank you for queuing or anything to the fans. To be fair nobody in the queue said anything to him to reply to but it wouldn't have harmed him to spend a few minutes to hang around instead of being unable to get away quick enough. Would have loved that CCTV footage to have been leaked.
Davey had the most money and the best players of that era, and we always looked terrible in the league. Robins and Hill after him had good runs looking really promising with less to spend - ovbiously those squads got torn apart. I don't know if he had good scouts or just got lucky, but some of the signings like Souza, Stan and Anderson were great. Obviously lots of slops too though, whish makes you think it was just football manager - Remember O'neil Thompson, Suad Filekovic and of course Mostto? No way we sent scouts to Peru. (For the record I think Mostto had something about him but just wasn't cut out for the English game). Surviving in that first season - from where we were - and the cup run were great achievements though, so he ca't go down as a total disaster. Its the opportunity cost of that budget, squad and momentum that we had in the hands of Mark Robins or someone else instead.
Probably not and his feelings were probably hurt from nobody shouting for him, so he might have been a little mardy.
