"Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested" You could apply that to viewpoints on both sides of the Brexit argument. A lot of expats I know are pretty much equally divided but overall the ones still with business interests are pro-Remain mainly because it removes the 'comfort zone' they are in i.e. they will have to do some work to adapt to the new environment rather than actually arguing it will damage the economy in the long term.

Anyway well done you for shoehorning Brexit into a thread about the Corona virus!!

Like him or loathe him, you can’t deny that Ronaldo has a great sense of humour!

This before the behind closed doors game in Italy.

I don’t know where you’re getting this gumph from.
I can find no official source telling people to panic, be fearful or suspicious.
All I’m seeing is the advice to wash your hands and to self isolate if you have travelled from certain areas.

I feel you have a habit of creating your own little drama so you can complain about it.

the fact that some people are panicking is just down to the stupidity of humans. Just same as the stupid humans who keep whinging on about this in comparison to flu, which would be useful if it wasn’t utterly stupid on every level.

They all had plenty in them when I paid a visit 25 minutes before kick-off, so I'm guessing that the problem was that no-one was topping them up. Or at least, not quickly enough.

Indian Wells becomes the first major sporting event to be cancelled. It was suppose to start today, all the Tennis players involved had already travelled there and they cancel it the day before it starts. Ridiculous decision.

I’m just glad all the lads that came home in 1945, my dad included, and 1918 settled back into civvie street as well as they could without bawling and crying every few years.

    Three points:
1 how have you managed to ignore that millions of people died of a flu epidemic straight after the First World War
2 plenty of those veterans never managed to go through life without severe mental health issues
3 WTF has this got to do with the current situation re COVID 19

More people died from Spanish flu in 1919 than in WW1 - mostly young, fit men who had returned from the battlefields.

The Champions League game between PSG and Dortmund is to be played behind closed doors.

How long before we start doing the same in England?

    Soon, I hope.

At least on Saturday I could have turned it off.

This is from our nhs trusts chief executive in his weekly e-mail to all staff:
...."it's really important to emphasize that the risk is low, and people should continue to go about their daily lives as normal".
I haven't as yet received any instruction specifically regarding the virus and there does not appear to be any extra attention/precaution being taken at our hospital.

So you’re not being instructed to panic then?

Weird; I have it on good authority that the advice is to panic, be fearful and suspicious.

Surely not taking extra precaution in a hospital is at best stupid and at worst gross negligence? Putting lives at risk, both patients and staff.

It is a psychiatric hospital, not physical health. We have been told to ensure that we handwash frequently, don't come to work if present with any symptoms and inform the trust if we have returned from any of the at risk countries. There is a policy on the front page of the intranet too.

Just common sense at this stage, but there are plans in place for my dept. should things get worse.

I think most employers have offered this same instruction. I know my wife's has and they have even listed a number of countries upon return one must self-isolate for two weeks. Interestingly the USA is not included on that list despite Washington state having such a high incidence of confirmed cases.
I must say though I have not noticed any increased knob cleaning on the wards.

Quite right. I've created barricades across all of our front windows and doors, made entirely of loo rolls. I've left just enough of a gap for me to squint out suspiciously at the Amazon/Tesco delivery people and shout, "Leave it on the doorstep, I'll come round and disinfect it when you're gone."
