Given we've had the best and worst gigs. ( Generally I believe they are renowned bands. Although I didn't recognize quite a lot on the relevant threads.) My thoughts turned to bands I've seen or still see who have brought the house down in these venues. Late 70's early 80's My very first has to be a band called Mickey's Monkeys. Who had John Parr in their line up. He later joined Bitter suite then Ponders End. But I went against the flow Mickey's Monkeys over those two. Teaser Method Later my favourite ever club band. Guns n oatcakes. Steve Johnson's version of boys of summer better than Don Henley's. Alexander's palace/Tony liddle band. Both created out of six of the best. Matt Black. Such a talented lad in all the bands he performs with. ( Wombwell lad I believe) On the scene today, fantastic bands that have talent in abundance. ODS Saxon better than the original for me. ( Brian Shaugnessy. Of Seventh son lead vocals + Oliver and Dawson original Saxon ) Matt Black see above Top Gun Coyote Born villains. ( AKA Edenthorn. brilliant doing their own stuff) The kill The Force. Thor Here's Johnny Whizzkid Mainly rock bands as you can see. So many I've not mentioned. But I believe there are a lot more better bands around now. Than the early 70's So if and when we get back to normal , get out and get to see these bands.
Loved Teaser, and an honourable mention to Bitter Suite and New Jersey Turnpike. Long time ago but great memories. Some great times at Birdwell Club, Cudworth Club, Hemswoth SSAF Club, Mapplewell Club and best of the lot, my local - The Birdcage. Seems like a lifetime ago and I suppose it is really.
I loved the club scene back then I've seen some cracking bands all the above, I got to see Def Leppard twice at Worsbrough Dale Club for an outrageous 10p entry fee
Was Teaser the one where the singer arrived on stage dressed as Andy Pandy. Spent most of my weekends int Birdcage and Jesters in mexborough. Me from Jump her indoors from mexborough around . 1974 -77. All decent venues. But a special mention for Wombwell reform. ( Till bleeding young uns decided to put up for the committee. Aresholes couldn't run a piss up int brewery. Which I believe was major factor in it's demise. Unless someone knows different) PS I don't know if New Jersey and New Jersey turnpike were one and the same. The lad in New Jersey made to the later stages of one of the singing talent shows on TV. Fantastic voice that would have been suited to the west end
Saw Frank White at the Mount many years ago, Broke two strings during a solo and never missed a beat, just carried on playing as nothing had happened, brilliant musician.
I saw John Otway and Wild Willie Barrett at The Great Northern (next to Cambridge Station - 1981ish), absolutely brought the house down. Full of energy, some great rocking songs and at times absolutely hilarious.
Anyone remember Burlesque? London based band sort of modeled on Roxy Music but with a comic twist. They never really made it but I did see them supporting Bebop Deluxe at Hammersmith Odeon in 1977 having previously seen them a couple of times at The Halfway, Highgate (next to Goldthorpe on the A635). They did an excellent song called "Lana Turner" and the guitar player Billy Jenkins was marvelous. Another regular at The Halfway was Mother's Pride who were a sort of tribute band before such a thing existed, doing mostly Yes and Genesis covers.
‘ODS Saxon better than the original for me. ( Brian Shaugnessy. Of Seventh son lead vocals + Oliver and Dawson original Saxon’ Each to his own but you are surely taking the piss
Squeeler - another top night out. Extending arms when performing "The faith healer" by Sensational Alex Harvey Band if I remember correctly.
Top band were Squeeler. Also liked the Uncool Dance Band. Saw Ponders End at my local Working Men's Club. Really good tight outfit.
Seeing as 2 are out of the original line up and prefer shaughnassy to Byford Like you say. Everyone to their own.
You've answered my question before I've asked it. Couldn't remember their name, but the extending arms stuck in my memory. Saw them at Birdwell Club. Great band.
I think all my favourites have been mentioned - Bliss, Bitter Suite, Ponders End - I saw Def Leppard at Dale club and Wombwell Reform as well. One that hasn't been mentioned is White Spirit, a band from the north east that featured on guitar one Yannick Gers, later of Iron Maiden. Also, does anyone remember Limelight with their Yes and Led Zep covers. They also wrote a few very good songs of their own including Man of Colours. The brothers Scrimshaw from the band are now a Queen tribute called Mercury.
As an alternative to the rock bands I've mentioned, I must also talk about ther Linda Wright Foundation, again from the north east. She was a very good looking black girl who could belt out Gladys Knight and Diana Ross songs as good as the originals. Also there were the XCELLENTS, an electro pop band who were great.
