You know it's disappointing that you continue your barbed and personal attacks on me and others in the posts or threads you start, especially at this time - and then in the same breath talk about the "divisiveness in society". In addition to that your points are just sloppy scattergun generalisations about your perception (from Italy) about people in South Yorkshire compared to the 'better class of people elsewhere.' Charming stuff, im sure.

Politics is bizarre, because with a few exceptions I’m seeing the opposite.
In my family and social circle, which is largely remain, lefty etc there’s a strong sense of doing what’s right, not stockpiling, supporting the NHS, helping neighbours etc.

the selfish, Blaim BoJo, for not giving clear messages etc comes from the ‘blame everyone else’ attitude and people that gave us Brexit.

Again a couple of notable exceptions who only see a polarised world view, one of whom might have pissed you off and triggered this thread.

It’s also interesting to read this as ‘our’ general community centred world view which you’re now so reliant upon has been seen as ‘virtue signalling’ for the last few years. You’re welcome

 

Among the Remain community on Twitter, most of them were already self-isolating as much as possible (and have been for weeks) and have been criticising the lack of clear messaging from the government. Many of them already had a stash of food in case of No Deal Brexit, so were already prepared (as much as possible) for the eventuality of the quarantine phase (and had been begging for it for weeks to save lives). Much of the scientific community (large overlap between the two) was even more scathing as they could see what was about to happen but felt it was being ignored - or worse still, the government was deliberately looking to prioritize the economy by pursuing a strategy that would kill hundreds of thousands of British people.

Whether you voted for him or not, having a Prime Minister who has made a career out of lying is not good in a time of crisis. As a classicist, he should be aware of the Aesop Fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", and now we are living in that. He could broadcast to every device in the country a message and a sizable proportion of the country wouldn't believe what he was saying. Good leadership is not just making decision, it is about being an effective and honest communicator and he might be good at after dinner speeches, but his bumbling and jokey demeanor are not suited for a serious matter. Neither is the lack of trust in politicians - many of whom have spent 12 years slagging off Labour for taking the exact same actions in response to a global crisis as they found themselves forced to take.

 

It's worrisome that last night they didnt even provide the media with as concise list of exactly what and whom is and isn't covered by the new regulations. Now they've had to scramble around this morning via Michael Gove confirming the details, by which point the key points have already become blurred around the edges. That's just really poor stuff.

From people I know in front line politics there’s rumblings in the Tory rank and file and either him or his Commie counterpart will be gone probably soon after this crisis .

And Michael Gove was confirming one thing on GMB and the opposite on BBC Breakfast re parents who co-share kids.

We’ve been told to come in to work today, we’re all trying to stay away from each other, not share break times am washing my hands so much they’re dry and red raw. Construction has been told to carry on but now many firms are closing sites down. Needs a very clear and specific list from Boris. And the golf clubs need to close ! Passed one this morning a group of at least 10 blokes stood talking waiting to tee off. Crackers

I think it’s probably true that both sides of the political spectrum fight wars that are long in the past. I believe that people should take personally responsible for themselves and their actions, but believing it should be so doesn’t make it so. There are lots of examples of that at this awful time.
I believe in the NHS and I think it’s creation it is one of the more civilised actions of the 20th Century. I believe that an underlying agenda of many conservatives in government has been to privatise it and if they had their way we would have something more like America’s appalling lack of care. Fortunately they didn’t have their way and we all have good reason to be thankful for that. They made do with cutting the investment in it.
My niece is a senior sister at one of the big Liverpool hospitals and she’s been moved from theatre sister to intensive care for obvious reasons. She was in tears the other day, because she knows that she is going to have to make decisions about who will die and who will have a chance to live and she doesn’t want to carry the guilt on her soul. She has a job to do and she will do it.
I hope the world will have changed when we come out of this and people will be more aware of what really matters in this world. Taking care of the planet, and the people in it and less of the egomaniac politicians looking after themselves.
