    17000 away fans from Barnsley.

What a town, what a set of supporters.

I only got in just before half time due to transport issues on a coach organised by a pub on Summer Lane, was 17 then. The world has changed a bit since then. What a game of football this was, versus the undisputed best team in Europe.

Keep the Red flag flying. Conway is a lovely person, but we are the Club.

Do you think that result was better than:

    1-0 Liverpool (a) 1997
    2-1 Liverpool (a) 2008
    1-0 Chelsea 2008
    3-2 Man U 1998

On a side note, what a blessed little club we are to have those historic results!

    Rotherham, Donny... erm

    I was gutted.
    I was in switzerland skiing.
Was the replay the one that was foggy? Used to go in the west stand with my dad but he could only get us tickets for the ponty, couldn't see the other end of the pitch.

I got there 20 minutes gone. Even just the last 15 mins I would have been happy. Best atmosphere for me in all 54 yrs watching tarn. Outnumbered home fans. 3 sides of the ground. Even pool fans acknowledged our brilliant support that night.

Given how strong Liverpool were at the time & the level of away support, i'd say it overshadowed everything for me. It is rumoured to be the biggest away support at a match in the UK. Not sure that is true, but that excludes games on neutral grounds. The Man Utd 3-2 is possibly the best on the field achievement in some ways, certainly the best at home. I was at all the 4 games you mention. I was sat in the kop with Liverpool musician mates when we won 1-0. We ended up at a massive party in York that night, as there was a band called Instasella playing, that my mates band were supporting. I had a bit of a fumble with Stella that night.

Thanks for this, never seen film of that night. That was an incredible cup run. 4-1 vs Brighton with goal of the century, 33,000 crowd vs Man City and then that night. That was a fantastic team.

Before that game, I’d fallen for the media-manufactured image of Liverpool football fans being knowledgeable, sporting and having a great sense of humour.

What a load of bollock$, as I found out when we were chased through the streets by these cheeky chappies trying to kill us.

I think Liverpool had four of the home nations captains in that team if I’m not mistaken including England captain Phil neale

Same for me. Got taken on the Kop by a bloke who I met from Chester College. He turned out to be a semi-monster. Everyone hated Kenny Dalglish (fair enough) but they had no sympathy at all for a team giving as good as they got. They moaned about their own team all match and screamed abuse at us. No acknowledgement for a team like us giving them a good game.

Outside they all wanted to smack your head in. Semi-monster saved me, to be fair to him.

Scousers? On the Kop - low life.

I heared a disabled Barnsley fan got tipped out of his wheel chair, to be fair it could have been fake news, did we have fake news back then, apart from in the Sun?

22nd November 1997 was my only trip to Anfield, ten years old and what a match to be at. I had stomach cramps from when Ward scored until the final whistle. And then we sang ‘are you watching Lawrenson?’ at the press box.I had more nerves at that game than any other for some reason, more than Bradford at home, more than Old Trafford in the cup, I just didn’t think we’d hold on. But heroics from Lara Lees and an outstanding debut from Peter Markstedt (resulting in me getting his name on the back of my away shirt) saw us through. Electric atmosphere in the away end that day. I remember the dogs abuse from the Liverpool fans aimed at the Barnsley coaches on the way in too, they thought they would thrash us. I wasn’t born when we played them in 82, but can only imagine the atmosphere that day too. You’re bang on JP, the fans are the club and always will be.

I went to Anfield in 2008. Walked across from Lime Street into first boozer. A section was cordoned off with a rope n' bouncer. There was a stubbly guy dressed in black with shades on and baseball cap sat on his own leant forward at a table with a full bar to himself.

I was told afterwards that it was Joe Calzaghe?
