Probably been done countless times so apologies. 1978-79 Hartlepool at home 1-0 Derek Bell got the winner
Vs Grimsby, April 79, 10 years old. My first game was to see us get promoted from Division 4. It was the only game I ever saw Barnsley play in D4. And me and my dad missed the winning goal cos we had to leave for the last bus. We were half way up the hill when we heard the celebrations. Amazing crowd for a D4 game. I was hanging onto the railing between west lower and the ponty. Unbelievable night. I've always loved night games and I think it stems from that first game.
That was my second game incredible night. Sat in West Stand at the ponty end side - great view of the goals
November 26th 1988 at Oakwell. Barnsley 5 v Bournemouth 2 in a game that saw David " Hot Stuff " Currie net four times and started a love affair for myself and my then 13 year old son, that has continued to this very day.
Always remember after one goal, he did a very bad forward roll, but the crowd loved him. Just shows the effect the Miners strike had on our crowds though. We were looking for a club to support and I had previously taken my lad to Hillsborough and Elland Road as one off visits, but he didn't fancy the very large crowds. There were only 4,937 fans at that Bournemouth game and my son loved it so much that as we made our way back to our car he said " can we start supporting Barnsley Dad.?" And that was that.
Barnsley 0 Birmingham 5 (2nd September '95) David Watson and Charlie Bishop sent off. 5 second half goals conceded and a penalty save at the death from Lee Butler to prevent a 6th. I couldn't wait to go again!
What a start! Another game I remember- must have been one of first games after Ponty was seated - Barry Fry was their at the time I think
4th February 1989 2-2 at Oakwell against Brighton. Can't remember who scored. Was at the Birmingham hammering. We started brilliant that year, we went into that game after beating a good Tranmere team mid week. Remember two loan players Adrian Viveash and Paul Kane had mares! I remember promotion year after the same kind of start and got beat at home by QPR 3-0 thinking here we go again.
1978...Torquay at home. Mi dad insisted I went as we had won 5 on the trot under Clarkie....Tuesday (?) night and lost 2.1...12744 attendance if I remember right. Played football all the time but never really had a favourite team at the time....don't know why (11 years old). ....up till then
It was! Couldn't have been more action-packed, just a shame it was all the wrong end! Yeh Fry was in charge (found highlights on youtube!) and Steve Claridge up front. Was the ponty terracing the season before then, 94/95?
October 67 home v. Lincoln City . Walked up the Central West Stand steps with my Dad the smell of wintergreen in the air . Saw the bright green playing area of Oakwell for the first time and it was a magical feeling . It has been ever since . Although the illusion has been spoilt many times after kick off .
November 12th 1988 vs Bradford City at Oakwell. One of 8,838 in attendance. Stood at the front of the Brewery. It was 0-0. Obviously.
No, the Ponty that season was getting demolished. Like most of the opposition who visited. Some team that season, we'd hinted at things to come.
2003. First game of the season, Colchester Utd at home. Dean Gorre with the goal from the spot to get us the 1-0 win. I'd been to a few before that (inc. Winstanley's testimonial) with mi dad but I didnt get the "bug" properly til I was about 11.
The sun rises. The sun sets. You live. You die. And Steve Claridge ALWAYS gets us. Those are the laws of the universe. Every time. The scruffy b&stard.
He certainly was. Ran up the touchline whenever they scored. Also our supporters had been goading Claridge all afternoon by shouting " Gypo" at him whenever he touched the ball. When he scored, he ran towards the Ponte end pointing at his name on the back of his shirt.
