Just heard from my sister in law that our niece Mary who is a senior ward sister in one of the big Liverpool hospitals and wot down with the disease on Wednesday and now has pneumonia in one of her lungs. She told us on a zoom call the previous Wednesday that although she was working in intensive care she wasn't a priority for a mask. They told her to take a standard surgical mask and tape round it.

They had a conference four years ago to decide on what they would need in the event of a pandemic. One of the recommendations was that they take warehouse space and stock up on PPE. The government ignored the findings on the grounds of cost as we were doing austerity at the time. The health minister was Jeremy Hunt who is now calling for more testing.

I wonder how many of those out clapping last night voted Tory

Best wishes to your niece e red ,the nhs and key workers got a good response from these parts mate no probs .
It’s the least we can do to show our appreciation and gratitude but I can see why they’d be calling out for more to be done to help them .
Seems the nation kicked them in teeth to appease Brexit last elections .

Unfortunately I think the latest opinion polls show the Tories have even more support than at the last election
A YouGov poll done 2 days ago shows the tories at 52%

No idea how that works but then I didnt understand how so many voted for someone who is a serial liar and hid in a Fridge

I have no confidence in the public to come to their senses any time soon

Firstly and most importantly I hope Mary gets well soon and makes a full recovery.
But I don’t understand how someone showing their appreciation to Nurses etc has anything to do with how they voted last time round.
Perhaps we should change the appeal to if you can prove you didn’t vote Tory please clap on a Thursday at 8pm.

Its a common phenomenon. I can't remember the name now, but at times of crisis (war, etc), the popularity of the incumbent government rises relative to the "threat". That is why George W Bush got the highest ever Presidential approval ratings in October 2001, but had the 3rd lowest by the time he left office. Trump and Macron have also climbed recently.*

*See also Thatcher and the Falklands, and Labour after the start of the Iraq War.

Because they voted for a party who froze their wages for years and failed to invest it their safety. I'm sure they would prefer to have adequate PPE and fair wages than applause. Although I'm sure the applause is appreciate.

If you can't see the irony in voting for a party who failed to support them for the last 10 years and then applauding as if they did, I can't help you.

So what about people who didn’t vote? Are they allowed to applaud?
You can justify the point of irony and that is a fair comment.
But people applauding should not be attempted to be Politicised at this point of time.
You mention you’re sure they appreciate being applauded, that’s exactly what the action carried out should be about, trying to pull together, appreciate people and hopefully raise the morale in some of the people like Mary who need it now.

If you cant see that and what to make it a Political statement then I can’t help you.

All those that voted for them last time i would suspect. In fact probably those that voted for the brexit party too. These people will see the government's actions as successful. Those who voted for anyone else will maintain that the government performed badly.
Obviously spending most of my career working in the nhs and being from barnsley i don't want to be living under a tory government. However i see the dominant tory press lauding Johnson in Churchillian terms after all this is over.

You could well be right but the Tory infighting and jostling for position tells me different tbh .
Someone is going to be blamed for this lack of testing etc and it’s gonna depend on how bad we’re hit imo .
Labour and other parties are holding off because of thecToryscTreachery with the Lib Dem’s in coalition and don’t want the flack if any from this .
Boris could well come out of it alright but make no mistakes this is still politics and they’re politicians so anything may happen .

I never said that anybody didn’t have the right to applaud. I think everyone should applaud.
I simply ask you to reflect on the effect of your vote as you applaud. The Tories have not been friends of the health service even as they wrap themselves in the NHS banner.

When both the Mail and Telegraph are very critical of a sitting Conservative prime minister on the same day, you know the press aren't too impressed with the performance so far.

They've been impressed by others though within the cabinet.

Fair enough, that’s not how I read it, but I suppose that’s the joys of the written word

I would say that there are a lot of people who voted Tory who disagreed with the NHS cuts. Quite a lot who will have said "i agree with a, b and c that they are doing but disagree with d. But with labour whilst I agree with d I disagree with a, b and c."
For those u can definitely see why they would still vote for the Tories despite being behind the NHS because I don't think a single person in the country agrees with EVERY policy that the party they voted for had. Its a question of is the sacrifice of your ideology on one aspect outweighed by the benefits of the numerous policies you do agree with?

Now don't get me wrong I don't think agree that their policies outweighed it. Not for one second. But I do see how you can vote for Tories without agreeing with their NHS policy and clapping them doesn't make those people hypocrites in my opinion.

Now those who actively support cuts to it. That's a different story.

So just so we are clear you don’t believe people should be pulling together to try to raise morale because it’s hypocritical?
What about Dr who votes Tory are the a hypocrite as well or are they allowed to show support?
