Why recently laundry items have tried to market themselves as somehow fashionable or trendy?

Not long ago we had tide Pods with "do you pod?" Now we have "perf with surf"

    Wtf is going on there?

I choose my laundry items based on how well I think they're going to wash my clothes not whether they are trying to be a craze. Does anyone actually go to Tesco and look at two and think hmm this one is cheaper AND washes clothes better but that one would make me perf because it's called surf and that rhymes?

And don't get me started in the "do you pod" ads which I personally think should have been banned and those responsible charged for producing

I think the idea behind it is that if you're in the shop and see surf, you will subconsciously think about the rhyme or jingle or whatever it is and be drawn to that item subconsciously.

It also makes people more likely to do what you've just done and comment on how stupid it is, thus drawing more attention to the product.

Only time I'm likely to see an advert on TV is if live sport is on. Watch everything else recorded even if I'm just 20 mins behind at the start.
The more frustrating ones are the ones you csmt skip online. YouTube and such.

Having spent my career in advertising I can tell you.

Advertising is a just a form of manipulation - getting you to think and believe something in order to profit other people. This has to be done as fast and effectively as possible.

“Do you pod?” Perf with surf?’ It’s not really about being trendy. You might not like the washing powder but the important thing is those words have stuck in your mind. That’s because the western mind thinks in patterns of 3. You learn your ABC. It’s as easy as 123. Constant repetition of 3 words will imprint a message on your mind, to the point you don’t really need any facts. All great manipulators know and use the pattern of 3. Ready, Steady, Go…

I’m lovin it. Labour isn’t working. Keep America Great. Finger lickin’ good. Just do it. Arbeit Macht Frei. Yes we can. Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Ein Fuhrer. Take Back Control. Do or die. Get Brexit Done.

    That’s all folks!

    Cheers for that. Very interesting.

I'm not sure if this is specifically the area of advertising you know about but what's your opinion on the "do you pod" adverts being brought out directly (and deliberately) in the wake of and during the craze where children were doing the "tide pod challenge" and eating them? Obviously they're poisonous yet it seems to me that the laundry companies were deliberately using that to try to influence kids to buy their pods to do the challenge with

Didn't know about kids eating pods. As long as they can't be held legally responsible, advertisers would try anything though.

It was 'Chaos with Ed Miliband.' The rule is keep it as short as possible - six words or under. God Save the Queen. Workers of the world unite. The Ultimate Driving machine. Your Country needs you! It's just 3 is the most effective.

Yeah it was some kind of challenge. They filmed themselves eating them and obviously it was highly dangerous. Then one of the big UK brands used that advertisement encouraging it.

You're right about they will use anything though

I wonder whether it's the western mind - or latin structured languages - that form the brain to work in threes.

    Do other cultures not?

I'm also not sure the "awareness" survives the first contact - I'd be very interested in your view.

Of course I come from a point of view as a consumer - and bow to your greater knowledge - but my perception is you can ask me if I pod all you like - but knowing it would kill my kids wont' get them anywhere near my house.

Simirlarly the tories can be as Strong and Stable as they want - I won't be voting for them - regardless of how rickety and unstable the opposition might be.

Also I might spend £5 on something that claims to be finger lickin good only to find it's like eating a block of salty lard and put it down to experience - the outlay and risk are fairly low.

But when the decision is more risky - a TV - A Car - a referendum choice - I'm going to do a bit more research than thinking - Vorsprung Dork Technic sounds reliable. Here's my cash mr. Hayseldene. I would imagine most folk are the same - but maybe not.

of course some people won’t be swayed by some propaganda or advertising.

I don’t eat any convenience food, very few takeaways and our cleaning and hygiene products are based on lack of irritation and haven’t changed on 20+ years.

but to dismiss the effectiveness of a campaign because it didn’t affect you, isn’t the salient point.

if they didn’t work, there’d be no industry, clearly they do work in a measurable way, otherwise smart people would have quit advertising years ago.

Take Back Control had to get into the minds of only a small percentage of the public.

More than a third of us were definitely in the Remain camp, a similar number wanted to leave, but almost a third were up for grabs, and the campaign was about them.

Unfortunately they’re the people you’re least likely to hear from.

No but there is a clear link. Advertising, propaganda and PR are all names given to what is manipulation. The modern father of this science was a man most have never heard of – Eduard Bernays. He was involved in propaganda after World War 1.

During the war propaganda just meant ‘information.’ But afterwards propaganda became a dirty word when the American and British public found out that most of the atrocity stories about the Germans had been made up. Bernays therefore rebranded ‘propaganda’ as ‘Public Relations’ or PR.

His clients in the 1930s were leading American companies who were looking to influence the public into buying more stuff but Bernays greatest admirer was Joseph Goebbels. He used Bernay’s techniques to sell Hitler to the German people.

Old Eduard looked forward to a time when “men in the shadows pulled the strings that control the public mind.” We’re just about there.
