We beat Rotherham United 1-0 with a goal from Ronnie Glavin (who else?) to clinch promotion back to the Second Division for the first time since 1959, under the management of the late Norman Hunter. Where did the time go? This is the photo used on the club's official twitter page. https://twitter.com/BarnsleyFC?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author
What a team that was as well . I think out of those 39 years 33 have been spent in the now Championship if I’m not mistaken which could quiete easily happen
1997/98 Premier League; 2002/03 Division 1; 2003/04 Division 1; 2004/05 Division 1; 2005/06 Division 1; 2014/15 Division 1; 2015/16 Division 1; 2018/19 Division 1.
Bloody hell. 22 straight seasons of doddering around the equivalent of leagues 1 and 2, with crowds down as low as a couple of thousand, losing at home to Barrow and Bradford Park Avenue among others. As a comparative young 'un I can't imagine the horrors, but then I can't imagine how wild the celebrations of getting out of that mire must have been - I bet everyone was like a dog with two dicks that weekend.
It was a Tuesday night game. The rest of the week at work, Stocksbridge Steel Works, was brilliant. The cherry on the cake was a few days later at the weekend when Sheffield United were relegated to Division 4!
My original comment still stands then He's not a diehard Tyke but my dad will have been at Stocksbridge steelworks at that time, I'll have to ask him about it
Cracking atmosphere at Oakwell that night in front of 26,000. Should have won the title that season, we were better than Rotherham.
I remember it well. Ronnie scored a hat trick that day against Newport County and we nearly, against the odds, overhauled Rotherham.
Night before my 21st birthday what a few days celebrations that was. Needless to say,I had a couple of Laikers that week
Was gutted as I wasn't allowed to go - school night. Remember the last home game that season- Newport?
That was a reyt side. Couldn’t bring myself to call Rotherham champions because we were miles better.
Thank goodness no-one had heard of Microsoft Excel in them days. A few of them wouldn’t have made the spreadsheet e.g. Ronnie, Evo, Ray McHale, Barra, Norman when signed as a player ........
Them were the days!!! Kick offs delayed cos people couldn't get to Oakwell on time, local pits changing shift times so lads could get to match and the best football to grace Oakwell ever in my opinion. A return to this would too my bucket list
I started as an 8 year old in the season after we got relegated to the then 3rd Division, so I spent that entire 22 years supporting them through thin and thinner. We could only dream of 2nd tier football until Clarkey and Norman came along. I cried the night we beat Rovrum. Tears of pure joy.
Stopped at the ship inn at worsbro. Straight after the game to catch a last drink. Pubs stopped serving 10:30 in them days. ( Or was it just Sundays ?) Jack Charlton was having a quiet game of dominoes with his mates. Poor bugger was not left alone with everyone singing and shouting in his direction. He never batted an eyelid though.
