I don't think people were calling for a lockdown in February, but many were calling for quarantine on people coming into the UK from places with large numbers of infections.
We're a completely different country to South Korea. I'm not so sure we'd so happily and robotically adopt a mindset that has us follow unquestioningly the edicts of our government. They have done a whole lot better than us though, it seems, in keeping infection and death rates down. It seems to me that we've shown that we have the ability to deal with a pandemic such as this. With this one we just decided to pull our fingers out about a month too late. This still doesn't detract from China's part in all this. They could have saved us all this devastation.
You mean mass testing, just like the WHO recommended? And the UK Government is introducing its own tracing app....
I know sir, I for one was still watching events on the media. I'm just saying that if the Government had been bold and proactive which in retrospect they probably should have been can you imagine what the reaction would have been?
The WHO don't seem to have been much wiser than the rest of us. Testing of itself, without further measures, obviously doesn't solve the problem GENEVA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday spoke highly of China's effective control measures to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak, and called on all countries to invest in preparedness, not panic to manage the epidemic. Addressing the 146th session of the WHO Executive Board meeting that kicked off here on Monday, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said China "take serious measures at the epicenter, at the source," which not only protected Chinese people, but also prevented the spread of the virus to other countries. "Because of this strategy, if it weren't for China's efforts, the number of cases outside China would have been very much higher," he said. Outside China, he said there are 146 confirmed cases in 23 countries. "It's actually small, and it's coming only slow ... So it can be managed," Tedros said. Tedros called on all countries to implement decisions that are evidence-based and consistent, and said that the vital importance for all countries is to invest in preparedness, not panic. WHO has made recommendations that there is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade.
