John Motson just been saying on talksport that they only expected a crowd of 9000 for replay.35000 there, remember it well.Very dodgy to and from white hart lane.Anybody know how many we took.
I went to that one on the train. I'd like to see a clip of it somewhere as I'm near the front behind the nets waving a scarf around!! Cant find a clip anywhere. I do remember coppers on the train telling us to pull the blinds down on the train back as they were expecting bottles and bricks being flung at us...
I remember their manager saying we have to change venues, our ground only holds 7000, where are we going to put the Enfield fans.
I thought we took nine thousand that night. Will never forget my jaw dropping as we walked into a 35000 crowd. Great night.
You might be right. I've found the match report in a scrapbook, but I saved The Barnsley Star one for that game and it doesn't mention a figure. It was something like 7, 8 or 9,000 though.
I saw the goals on YouTube the other night. Bit grainy picture but showed Glavin’s class clearly. I think it was the Barnsley FC archive series.
Went on the special, got home about 4 in the morning - I think it was delivering the bloody mail. Coppers wouldn't let us take the 'Enfield Are Camel Fodder' banner into WHL - had to leave it outside. Meanwhile the Enfield fans had got their reply inside okay 'Enfield Fodder Poisons Camels'. Thankfully they didn't - another Ronnie masterclass, if memory serves.... Some lads getting a right shoeing on the walk back to the train. Mad twenty minutes in the dark that.....
“Whoever mooted it was insane, Enfield Barnsley at White Hart Lane, with [cant remember] for Glavin’s tricks, it’s Enfield one and Barnsley six”. Submitted by someone to the Star?
I always thought it was 10,000. Incredible atmosphere, only problem was we were a bit late and went in the first turnstile we came to and were in with the locals. As for the game, I seem to remember us having a dodgy spell early on but our fitness as professionals eventually came through, not to mention the class of Glav (2 goals?, no idea who got the other). The original game at Oakwell was altogether different and we were lucky to survive it.
Remember the day as planning on going but instead ended up in Pinderfields having my knee sown up. Playing footie at school and a lad sliced my knee open with plastic studs that had seen better days. So I have a memento of that day on my knee. Was it 3-0 with Glavin having a big part?
Estimated 16-17,000 at anfield. Estimated 12-14,000 at ayresome park. 5-10,000 numerous others eg local derbies.
Probably my biggest regret is not making the Anfield game. I was at pretty much all the others. Along with a heck of a lot more from on here. We were so lucky to be on that rollercoaster.
I got in a taxi with my mate at HMS Collingwood, £44 to WHL. We were in the queue for ages waiting to get in, think they only had a couple of turnstiles open.
You remember it well but can't remember how many we took? I think Aylott got the first and third and Glavin the second. We filled the lower south terrace with about 6,000 but I can't remember if we had the seats above. I saw the goals on telly after the match but haven't seen them since. Glavin's was a lovely one-two on the edge of the box followed by a rasping drive.
