I used to work at New Street from 1983. Market Hill was the other branch at the time. Peel Square branch opened sometime after the miner's strike. YB were very helpful to the striking miners & took business off the other banks. They also had free banking, which the big 4 didn't (I think the Co-op also did free banking at the time). I left YB in 1996, but I'd worked around Leeds & the Head Office from 1989 onwards. Can't remember when New Street & Market Hill closed, as I didn't have anything to do with them after I left. The whole organisation went to **** when National Australia Bank took them over, which I think was 1989.
Free banking explains why a lot of miners took their Buisness there probably that’s why I went there but it’s a long time ago now lol. I can remember staff members coming to the pit canteen recruiting and helping miners open current accounts as Not sure if it would be NCB or British Coal at the time we’re moving towards paying wages into banks .
Yes I signed up to the Yorkshire Bank while sat in the pit canteen at Houghton Main. I thought the TSB had the bank before Tommy Wallocks pub, could be wrong though.
You could be right as well lol, the only thing I’m definite about is the three Yorkshire Banks , I knew the Tommy Wallocks was a bank and I thought it was the Yorkshire Penny but you’ve just thrown a spanner lol
Two sausage , two rashers Bacon , Two eggs, Beans /Tomatoes, Two doorstop slices of bread and butter , cup of coffee . Less than a quid lol.
Still se her in town sometimes , she used to walk through baths to baths office with boxes of soap saying hello to everyone some stark naked lol.
Yes she once offered to wash my back, her and big Karen was always up and down to the baths office lol.
Always game for a laugh the canteen women . Can remember when they flooded the pit with outside contractors and the queue in the canteen were miles long and Marlene shouting any Houghton Main regulars to the front and serving us before them .
Yeah me as well , nothing worse than running out of soap when canteen closed and no one in baths office . Especially if you’d sneaked out lol
PP was definitely Yorkshire penny bank, it's got YPB inscribed above the door. So so far we have Tommy wallocks was TSB, Yorkshire Bank was a pub, paddy power was Yorkshire Bank but originally Yorkshire penny bank. Any others?
According to this Tommy Wallocks (Chambers) was part of the Chronicle Building before bank . https://whatpub.com/pubs/BAR/32/chambers-barnsley
Yes, remember sitting in Grimethorpe Colliery canteen as a wet behind the ears 18 year old getting abuse from miners. "Character building".
