When people mention the USA figures, they say "ah but they have a far bigger population". But when discussing the UK figures - vs. Italy or Spain - they won't use the same logic. It is a bad figure (one death from it was one too many) but although it is now the highest in Europe it is not an entirely accurate stat.
We were told only recently that other countries will be looking at our success by Boris and his ministers. If this is success I would not want to see failure
No. Brave Boris fought it, and won. He beat the enemy, just like we did in the Second World War. Boris means Boris, and we need to get coronavirus done. Stay at home, save lives, protect Robert Jenrick.
Don't the Italians and Spanish only count hospital deaths though? Gave up taking any notice of the figures weeks ago, every country counts them differently and they only tell part of the story. Keep yourself and your family safe and that's it.
I think its beyond doubt that its the highest in Europe its not an accurate stat because we are under-counting both cases and deaths the fact many people who would be tested in say Germany are not tested here makes our figures actually look better in comparison than they should be though I do concede parts of Europe are no better at testing than we are. we really only count deaths in hosptials and now some of the deaths in care homes - deaths at home are never counted Bearing in mind we had 2 to 3 weeks of a head start on Italy and Spain it doesnt look that good really
Think Europe had to point out to us that we were underestimating deaths in care homes so it is is like for like as far as I'm aware.
Considering we are an island separated from other European countries I think it is pretty shocking to be honest.
However the figures are 'spun' by the Government the number of deaths IS terrible. If anyone tries to defend the Government on this by suggesting that the deaths could have been even worse then they are completely missing the point. The Government has governed very badly on this. 30,000 people dying is absolutely horrific. As a Labour guy, just in case anybody comes back at me, I will say that hypothetically this would have been terrible under any socialist government. However, we haven't got a socialist government we have a Tory one. The Tory Government has been dreadful. Period.
Compared to Europe the figures are bad enough, but when you have countries like South Korea and Japan that were struck badly before we had a confirmed case having around 800 deaths between them in total, something has gone badly wrong. At this stage, anything around 3-500 dead would be a success and anything close to the pro-rata figures from Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam (6 deaths between them) would have been absolutely fantastic. How can Vietnam, a country that is significantly poorer, with a population of over 90million at a higher density that the UK do so much better? As it stands, the UK* now has more dead from COVID-19 than Asia, Africa, South America and Australasia combined. Just let that sink in for a moment. More people have died on the British Isles with a population of 66 million than the countries of the world that account for over 6 billion of the population - nearly 100x higher. The other parts of the world will unfortunately get worse before this is over, but our government has let far too many people down needlessly. *This also applies to France, Spain, Italy and USA
I read that we've done the lowest tests per 1,000 citizens in Europe. The next lowest has done over 3 times as many tests as us. Shambles.
If this was Labours efforts I Would very critical, gutted & furious, c'mon tory boys n girls admit it, it's a bleedin shambles.
Ah but 3,000 of them have been sent letters saying they are going to die, so have been counted in the death figures that how its always been recorded.
It's going to be worse than the blitz for loss of lives in our country. We are a small island surrounded by water it shouldn't have been possible to screw up so badly. Now if Rishi Sunak lowers furlough to 60% whilst keeping places shut it's going to ruin even more people.
Id guess that after lockdown light our death toll will rumble on at a faster pace than Spain and Italy's, making things look even worse.
Not so much inaccurate, just unknown. Although I'd be surprised if we weren't there or there abouts. We had 2 weeks over Italy and the government wasted that advantage.
