My qualifications are based around the pit apprenticeship Craft/technician/then honours.( didn’t do honours) Totally different regs to other industries. But in general same qualifications as onc hnc etc. ( I have since done the 16th and 17th editions in my present job but have no intention of doing the next version. My Age, ******** to it. Very rarely have to refer to it)
But the main incident I was referring to re the conman was as follows.
An old friend on way to an away game. Said can I ask you summat re a electric shower I’ve had fitted. It keeps tripping the 30A breaker after a few minutes. I’ve rung the bloke who installed it and he says the breaker is tired and will require changing.(got him out of the chron.) So I went to look. The sparky just happened to have a replacement shower in his possession and offered it to my mate.
    1. The original shower was 7.5kw.
    2. The breaker was 30A
    3 The pull-switch was 30A
    4. The cable was 4 or 6mm
    Fine
The fckin shower he fitted was 10kw. No wonder it was tripping the breaker.
    Requirments
    45A breaker
    45A pullswitch
10 or 16 mm cable. Would need to check.
My mate didn’t want to cause a fuss as it worked fine on setting 1. ( half the power)
I begged him to tell me who the **** was so I could phone him and have a go. Then report him for putting my mate in danger of having a fire on his hands.
Brother in law had new bathroom fitted. Whilst away. Had a water leak that developed over a week or so then tripping a breaker. The electrician who did the electrics went back 4/5 times, couldn’t trace the fault. Incompetent *****. BIL Asked me to have a look as he was exasperated. Took me a couple of hrs to locate the fault. But with the proper gear a proper trained domestic spark would have probably found it quicker.
Really fcks me off the amount of incompetence that’s out there charging top dollar.

Speaking of immersion heaters. Provided it as wired up correctly in the first place and it is now disused is there any reason why I can't (and by I I mean and electrician) simply take the switch cover off the wall, disconnect the cables going to the heater and wired a socket onto the existing power supply cable instead?

    Basically
Is it fine to disconnect the cables from the immersion heater side and remove them from the tank? I can't see any technical issue with having an immersion heater in the tank with no power going to it?

Is it fine to use the cable powering the switch to instead power a plug socket in the same place?

Yes the cable should be big enough 1.5 or 2.5 mm. And the supply will be normally for an immersion heater via a 16A/20A breaker or 15A/20A fuse. Which is ok for a radial cct.
The only concern I may have would be if it was and industrial sized immersion heater. If that’s the case. then it probably has a bigger fuse/breaker. Anything above 20A I would reduce. If the cable is only 1.5 mm you are at its maximum at 20A. Anything above 1.5 mm is not an issue.
Ps if you get an electrician to it. Don’t be flannelled on the face of it, it appears, as it’s as simple a job as you’ll find., done in no time at all.He/she would normally carry the parts not have to go shopping for over an hr looking for em.

Elsecar main mate. Mexbro college. 1972-75. Barnsley college 75-78. Did my practicals at manvers. but for some reason I seem to remember doing summat at monk Bretton training centre. Wasn’t it on Burton rd.
One of the years I went to Barnsley college. We had sat the wrong syllabus. Nobody could do the exam questions. Everyone failed and had to do another year. ( How on Earth you can do the wrong syllabus is totally beyond me. Heard of similar cases especially in schools over the years. ) when were you there.

Cant say i miss it all too much apart from the banter and camaradie.

Reading this thread.... All I can say is "Luxury"!!! In Italy the standard ENEL (I refer to them as ANAL) supply to rural domestic properties is 3kW!! You pay extra standard charge for each additional kW . We have 6 but the supply is a bit flaky and whilst reliability has improved the infrastructure has barely kept up with the increased consumption like small tech industrial estates along the main routes. Sockets and plugs are NOT fused and rely on RCDs on the distribution board. on that point we have two breakers - one for lights and one for the Ring ( both upstairs and downstairs) so if anything causes a problem and it trips it can be a sod to find out where it is. We also have a main RCD breaker and also one anti surge to protect from fulmine (Lightning strikes)
It is therefore NOT a good idea to use an electric kettle (we use a one on a gas hob) at the same time as the oven , microwave, Induction hob, or deep fat fryer. We have only tripped the system once but the lights do go a bit dim when we run too much stuff at a time. Geo thermal heating was our plan when we restored the property but the compressor would have needed to much juice everytime it kicked in.
The one good thing about the Italian system is wiring to sockets is always contained in interlinked tubing built into the walls. When we had an microwave antenna fitted outside for the Internet, they loosened a few wall sockets and routed the internal cable to the modem through the tubing so no unsightly internal wires exposed or any need to channel out the plaster.
Our water supply is good but pressure in rural areas varies so we have a 750 litre tank which has a pump fitted with a relay to supply the house at a constant pressure. When you flush the loo or run water at night the lights dim momentarily as the pump kicks in!!

I believe go to chat at the top of the page if it's not there click onto private conversation on the same page. If not, I'm not sure how you link to it. Novice myself at this game. next time someone reminds me, I'm going to have to write it down. " Here one minute. Gone the next"
