41 years since The Reds won Promotion from Division Four in that home match against Grimsby - revisit the whole season here https://www.flickr.com/photos/barnsleycollector/albums/72157632526430658
Look at that photo 3rd down!!!!!!! And to think they don't allow flares into Oakwell now.....FLARES!!!!!!!!!!
Superb reading, many thanks for that, really brought it back to me as I was at most of those games. We had a huge away support and a lot of clubs had their highest attendances for years when we came to town. Outstanding memories for me? Scunny away, York away (on the football special), Donny away And that last home game against Grimsby....just awesome!
Thanks for sharing that. It invoked some fond memories. Went to every game home and away that season.
Thanks for that. There’s someone I know on the 4th division team photos. Ian Burgin, I didn’t know him back then, but I knew he was on BFC’s books and was close to the first team. Played local football with him, and until quite recently, pool on a Sunday night in the pub. Going to have to show him this.
I imagine that the final run up to the pearly gates will be uphill on an uneven cinder field, with the crowd noise in the distance, the joy of remembering running up at 2.55 on a Saturday as to be replicated one more time surely
Fantastic. People shouldn’t underestimate the impact Allan Clarke had on the club, making it so much more professional and setting us on the road to return to our rightful place in the second division. And how many teams these days would fancy playing against a midfield containing Graham Pugh and Alan “Animal” Little?
Pugh & Little would certainly have to adjust their game to play nowadays. But no more than today's footballers would have to make similar adjustments to play yesteryear to avoid legal tackles from behind and poor quality pitches.
The other day I watched a YouTube vid of the 1979 2-0 win at Swillsbro. Always puts a smile on ones face. I’d forgotten just what a lovely touch Pughy had. Very good player.
