It was the leisure centre - not sure about Kirk Balk bit . We used to mainly go to Royston so Holyland made a nice change
My mate's sister lived in Hoyland and we often cycled over to hers on a sunday from Bolton on Dearne. It wasn't a hard ride except for the hill from Elsecar Pit up to where she lived, it used to damn near kill us but we never gave up.
Dodworth has had a mixed development, in my opinion. Restaurants, hotels, new independent shops, variety of new homes built are some of the positives. Deterioration of a community spirit, closure of the post office, poorer quality of doctor's surgery care are some of the negatives.
No. Then again, I don't believe my village was some sort of Utopia either. The air is much cleaner than when I was growing up. The houses aren't covered with sooty grime like they were. I don't see neighbours hitting their wives and children with a leather belt and the police (along with other neighbours) turning a blind eye, claiming nothing can be done due to it being 'a domestic'. Sorry, but I don't look back at an imaginary 'good old days' period of my early life, conveniently ignoring the distasteful aspects whilst concentrating on the positives.
Growing up when I was in my teens. (70’s) Hoyland had probably the most number of pubs. clubs and a nightclub. Outside Barnsley town centre. Was a brilliant place. To socialise. ( unless the locals had us run out of town. Being jumpers ) Became a ghost town to the extent Wombwell overtook it. Seemed everyone stopped going out or moving further afield for nights out. Real shame. Got loads of friends that live there. (please don’t tell em they’re friends of mine I don’t want to give em the wrong impression, ) Hope it can return to its glory days. But it appears they’re a long way off still. Sadly.
I've read/heard that there's some great places to drink in the Hoyland area - Knave & Kestrel and Tap & Brew are two micropubs that keep getting rave reviews. By contrast, Penistone where I'm from is embarrassing - not a single decent pub in the town centre now the White Heart has shut in mysterious circumstances. The Bridge, Crown and Spread are a disgrace.
Love it. You're on form today, old mate. That's the ceremony for the newly built war memorial, if anyone's interested.
More places should have war memorials. I think things like that look absolutely beautiful and I love that no matter how bad people think kids are these days, or how bad they thought they were 30 years ago, it is extremely rare to see anyone vandalise a war memorial
