It goes against the Special Advisor rules. There’s no point comparing this situation to “anyone else” - anyone else would have been sacked or resigned 2 days ago
The normal thing would be to release a statement that is printed by the press or shared on his social media. Some people film themselves saying something and release that. People do not normally get to give a full press conference including Q&A in the Rose Garden of No.10, unless you are the Prime Minister him/herself.
All you have to do is create rules for the nation, break those rules and they will give you a live platform to address the nation.
Can't imagine the backbenchers are particularly enamoured with his early beatification and the damn good massage Cummings ego is getting.
Do you want to hear his side of the story, maybe an apology, maybe hear of his resignation, or not? Or do you want to have this thing drag on to 50 more pages on here (as it might well do anyway). Most of the moaners on here think he runs the country anyway. Let's hear it, hear him get questioned on it, and not get upset about whether it's live, from the Glastonbury stage or mouthed by Basil Brush.
He's not resigning, how bloody arrogant would you have to be to schedule a question and answer session for after your resignation and stream it to the nation? What are they supposed to ask? 'What took you so long?' 'Have you been paid off?' If he wants to apologise, he can release a statement.
Don't watch it then. There has to be a point to it, otherwise he wouldn't be putting himself up to be a sitting duck. It's gripping stuff. He's broken a few lockdown rules and it seems he should be out of his job. But he's not a serial killer FFS. Nobody's been hurt in the slightest by what he himself did (apparently), ridiculous though it was. We've got Supertyke hoping he re-contracts covid (which nobody on here batted an eyelid about btw) - I mean - let's retain our sense and humanity here.
[But he's not a serial killer FFS though .[/QUOTE] I think that is just one of the issues. He actually might be....
All of the above is true. However. He's designed a set of rules that have (rightly or wrongly) stopped parents seeing children, friends seeing each other, people going to work and most importantly, people unable to say goodbye to loved ones who have died alone and in great pain. He's then thought "fck it". I'm above my own laws, I'm doing what I like. You can surely see the anger and upset?
He's 9 minutes late for something he shouldn't even have been given the chance to do. I hope the journalists all follow the rule we had at uni, if the lecturer doesn't turn up during the first ten minutes, you can then leave. Then they should just all report on his arrogance at no showing and tell him he had his chance and blew it.
Just been on the daily briefing. The father was spoken to by Police and confirmed that Cummings, wife and child were at his property. No further action was taken by the officers in attendance, but some advice on improving security arrangements was given.
No one believes he shouldn’t put his side of the story, but he’s an unelected official and not a civil servant, he has no ‘right’ to this platform.
