Thanks for the edit Farnham. It's certainly not my aim to blame the EU solely, but there is actually a lot more going off behind the scenes than tends to get reported in the UK press. There have been massive changes in the last two years...and the cherry picking is going on from both sides. If you remember his press conference in 2018 with the slideshow, Barnier put great store in making clear that the only deal that was available was one of the current models, in fact it was in his interest to offer those deals almost as a threat, knowing full well that the UK had got a lame duck Prime Minister with no working majority....many Remainers politicians keen to keep us in the EU, or at worst (from their point of view) as close to the EU as possible, Peoples Vote marches etc, the advice of Blair etc...many in the EU genuinely thought the referendum could be overturned if the hard Brexit pressure was exerted...that tactic was understandable at that time. The situation to some extent has now backfired on him.... unpredictable events resulting in a massive majority and the election of a UK Govt free of its previous constraints. To be fair to him, no one could have reasonably predicted the events of late 2019. That set of slides that were so useful then in putting pressure on have become a bit of a liability now that the UK is indicating that it is prepared to take one of those options, notably the Canada option. This is where the change from the EU's perspective had to be made, and where Barnier's new emphasis is on "the level playing field". It's not about workers rights, employment or environmental law, British legislation is often higher than current EU requirements...this is about State Aid legislation. WTO terms allow much greater leeway for Govt's to state aid than do EU rules and the EU are worried it would give us a significant competetive advantage ( why they worry I'm not sure as Tory's traditionally are not fans of state aid). However there has been a very interesting development caused by the Covid crisis, that threatens the EU's basic rule based system....Germany has recently announced a 5 billion bailout of Lufthansa...this is against EU state aid rules, but the German High Court has over ridden the ECJ norm and judged that it is within their rights to do so. The fallout from this internal battle may have a great bearing on where things go from now.
Somehow a deal has to be struck where the EU can show that leaving is not an option to other members and that the UK can demonstrate that leaving will not lead to any long term detriment of its citizens. Good luck to all the negotiators.
i share exactly the same concern - it leads me to the exact opposite conclusion. 1 this country has become more racist / nationalistic than many of our EU neighbours. 2 The EU by nature cannot possibly be nationalistic - it is clearly a group of disparate nations. So therefore can’t become Nationalistic, it’s pluralist at its core. 3 to add to the above - the reason for the existence of the EU was to cut off at the knees nationalism in Europe as historically that had led to many wars. This is the longest period of peace in Western Europe in history. I appreciate it’s not currently perfect; but compared with the last 500 years it’s amazing.
I tek it thar dunt travel much rarnd Europe then, Afd, Germany, New Flemish alliance, Belgium, Vox, Spain, Freedom party, Austria, just to name a few, Nationalism has and will always be a burden in Europe, and its growing more to the Right than thar thinks, Right wing and populist parties around Europe are gerrin bigger. Identity and Democracy, might be worth a look at, broaden ya mindset a bit. The UK, believe it or not is way down the pekkin order.
In The EU has a human rights record that’s amongst the best in the world. And as it isn’t a Nation, it’s impossible for it to become Nationalistic.
AFD are currently polling under 10% in Germany - their polls have halved in 3 months. I would take all of those and put the Conservative & Unionist Party, who in recent elections polled around 44% in the UK as the most popular far-right party in Europe at the moment.
Aint sed that, just pointing out that Europe is more Nationalistic than thar thinks, Switzerland, how Nationalistic is that, Austria, and Hungary, to name a few and these are Countries I wouldn't av thought. I love this post and threads cos its a Thread that would open a lot of peoples EYES if they just took time to read about the RIGHT, Nationalism and Europe, rather than just listen to a fellow ANTIFA poster.
If they work; the employer is duty bound to ensure the employee is legally here (once working they’re self sufficient by nature) if they’re not employed; the Universal Credit rules are so much stricter than the JSA rules were. if they’re neither employed nor unemployed then they’re either self sufficient or criminals. if they’re criminals we had the option of not letting them in, so if they’re criminals and here - that’s our fault. no matter how many times those points are posted though, they’ll be ignored.
Typical OPINIOATED POSTER, ive cum back with a post but an OPINIONATED POSTER, will not read wots bin said. My post was in response to the post you posted about Europe not becoming Nationalistic, NUF SED.
Where did I say that? It’s not me that needs to get a grip, you’re likely to have a coronary finding an enemy round every corner. You posted that an extreme RW German Party had x% of the votes. I added that an extreme RW party here had 40%. I never used any of the words you’ve just accused me of. let’s try and keep it adult eh?
well how else do you explain 44% of the votes for the most right wing government we have had since WW2? They are either Right wing or Stupid - Right wingers aren't all knuckle draggers there are some very smart right wing people. (though not in the current cabinet it seems - possible exception of Sunak)
have you found a pub that’s open? we all read what you wrote. When it was disparaged you started typing in capitals and ignored the fact your own country has the most populist right wing government in Europe. By a country mile!
I answered a post, if you ANTIFA knuckle draggers cant accept a post then I apologise for my input into a one sided THREAD .ANOTHER ONE.
