I saw this earlier, it’s a brilliant and oh so true piece on Trump, British Writer Pens The Best Description Of Trump I’ve Read “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response: A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief. Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty. Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down. So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are. • You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man. This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of ****. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a **** was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set
Actually, Dave, I have relations in America (they've lived there for nigh on fifty years) and their opinion of Trump mirrors yours. Laura has friends over there and they dislike Trump and his apologists even more.
My Mrs works at Cannon hall farm and they get bus loads of American visitors turning up and Trump is usually the topic of conversation and the number of times they’ve felt the need to apologise for having him as a president.
Putin couldn't destroy the USA by force of arms So he ensured Trump was elected President He Knew Trump would do the job for him, and he is performing superbly That's my conspiracy theory for today
But as many threads on here and multiple social media examples have proved, it's almost impossible to even suggest anything slightly in defence of him, even if you're not a fan yourself, because that's not a discussion to be had. It means a lot that don't think the way of the 'trend' rarely comment on it and stay silent. That's a trend that started with Brexit, in my opinion, which is why every Brexit idiot you see is on Social Media has Union Jack flag in his name. Because anyone normal, with normal views, is almost shamed in to not getting involved in the debate. This is only my opinion of course, but I see and hear it everyday with friends and colleagues (not in regards to me I might add).
No loko, i wasn't aiming the comment at you. I'd have done a reply rather than a general comment if i was. No offence meant.
There’s no possible defence for possibly the worst example of humanity I’ve seen in my lifetime. I’m not even going to begin to present my reasoning because it’s out there for all to see and has been critiqued by far greater minds than mine. Just to qualify that I don’t form my opinions from what I see and read in the media I lived in the US for 4 years and still have friends there.
Beat me too it it mate, personally I can’t stand the bloke, he’s a bully a narcissist, a compulsive liar, a racist, he’s like a petulant child if he doesn’t get his own way, he’s got a childlike vocabulary, Id put in the same bracket of Harvey Weinstein, I find him just a horrible horrible bloke, I honest can’t see one redeeming feature about him but I’m also open minded and I’m quite happy to be proven wrong about him, if someone can show me that he’s actually a well read intellectual and the anti trump lot have got it wrong and misunderstood him then I’m happy to listen,
Because there's an assumption that if you don't feel a certain way about something then you're a terrible person. Rather than just being someone, using this thread as an example for instance, that agrees with many of the sentiments but can also not want to fall in line with that popular opinion fully and can see some of the other side too. Especially in a country where it's in their nature much more than ours to be completely turned off by Democrat policies. These conversations never go well on here because you lose that face to face normality of an open and honest conversation, tone of voice, etc.
I can only speak personally of seven family/ friends in the US. Every one of them detest him. The brother in law has a marine technology business in New York State. He's just setting up a sister company and is doing it here in Ireland because he doesn't like the way things are going over there. A bit extreme maybe but better safe than sorry.
You’re trying to rationalise the divide but in general the truth is that educated people are democrats and Trump supporters are Rednecks.
That's a wild, wild statement and not the truth at all. It's exactly the type of sweeping statement I've been talking about.
I’ll stay on the fence on this one. Donald Trump is a c.nut. A nuclear, grade a c.nut. And anyone who supports him is also a c.nut. They’re either thick and know no better, in which case they’re thick c.nuts. Or they’re well educated and consciously supporting him. In which case they’re even bigger c.nuts than the thick ones. Other than that, I don’t really have an opinion.
I watched a good documentary last night on Sky Documentaries about the use of fake news. The targeted use of it in certain states and communities is extremely clever and dangerous. Trump is nothing more than a conduit. Small Texan communities have different fears to small New York state communities. American's like us Brits have been played like second handle fiddles by masters of psych-Ops and propaganda. Educated, uneducated, rich, poor, black and white have all been had by these ********. I won't use the term rednecks ever, rednecks were unionised miners who stood up their rights. Nobody born and bred in Barnsley should ever use the term in a negative manner.
It's why people stay silent . Because it's a very obtuse statement that leaves little for discussion . A self defeating narrative en masse .
It’s not at all. Check out the voting maps. The North East and West Coast states where the majority of the US high tech companies and wealth creators are located are blue areas. The Mid-West and Bible Belt states are predominantly red. It has always been thus, Divided, fecked up country. Love it but fear for it’s future.
Trump won the election by taking the blue belt above New York (exact location might be wrong). Hilary didn't realise, or appreciate, how much her and Bernie split the Democrat vote and assumed she would still win in certain electoral states, where in fact Bernie was the popular vote and Trump flipped them. Not rednecks voting there. You're claiming there are 60 million rednecks and that is wrong and a wild statement. For all Trump's awfulness he (or more realistically his campaign team) had a deliberate tactic to over-invest their time in electoral states where Bernie Sanders was the leading Democrat. Hillary didn't spend as much time in those same states, thinking they were bankers, and she lost them.
